While the players are (im)patiently waiting for the Warbond announcement and the big Singularity Party, they have plenty of time to ponder some of the never-solved mysteries. Like, for example, what are those ports on the back of a helmet? This detail on the helmets has bothered many Helldivers 2 players, since it seemingly doesn’t have a purpose. Well, the Game Director and the CCO of Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt, finally provided the players with an answer.
The CCO Solves the Helmet Mystery
As you may be aware, Pilestedt has been on a sabbatical since the end of January. Then, he announced he wouldn’t be returning to Helldivers 2, but starting a new project once he returns. Still, he occasionally pops by and discusses the game with fans on social media.
This time, he delighted the players when he joined a discussion about a detail on the helmets. As you have probably noticed, at the base of the helmet, there is a port of sorts. Players tried to guess what it was for, and Pilestedt helped them out.
One player suggested the port was for oxygen. Pilestedt noted: “Yep, this is what we originally intended it for. Oxygen supply during planetfall. When the Helldiver emerges from the Hellpod a connecting hose was supposed to disconnect to explain it, but we didn’t have time to make the anim for it”.

He also confirmed the ports on some body armor were intended to connect to the helmets. The CCO said: “Yes, there was some idea of pressurization for some suits and connectability between helmet/suit”.

This tracks, as Pilestedt previously talked about how different the original plan for the helmets was, but the devs didn’t have enough time to bring it to life. However, according to Pilestedt, you shouldn’t expect the helmets to change anytime soon.
He stated: “Haha, actually there is so much the team is working on. I think we have less time than before release, since we now want to release great updates ever so often to keep the game fresh”.

Helldivers 2 Players Have Plenty of Ideas for the Ports
Obviously, Helldivers 2 players loved that Pilestedt joined the helmets’ discussion. Some players compared it to getting lore answers “straight from the tap”. And, of course, once they knew what the ports were for, they had ideas on how to use them.
JustGingy95 mused: “Very super serious question, can this helmet port also be used for beverages like one of those beer hats? I would like to slurp some Super Earth brand refreshments while I slaughter the enemies of Managed Democracy by plugging some sort of bottle in, staying hydrated is important after all, both while gaming and on the field”.
Pilestedt answered: “Hahaha, well, I guess it would work depending on how high you place your beers…. it would flow into the helmet… kind of like drink problems in Piastri’s car”. Yes, that’s a Formula 1 reference.

Of course, players had even more ideas, but they were mostly just content that they could chat with Pilestedt about the game. These small exchanges with the devs can mean quite a lot, especially during the content droughts. So, while you are waiting for the update, enjoy chatting with the devs occasionally, or join us on Achernar Secundus. Let’s complete the Major Order. For Liberty and Super Earth.
