The three most-anticipated isekai anime of 2026 are just around the corner

Isekai remains popular as a sub-genre of fantasy fiction for a good reason. These stories, in which one or more characters get transported into a new world, offer a blank slate with limitless possibilities. What’s more, the theme of reincarnation brings with it unprecedented freedom, allowing characters to forge new identities and access unexplored facets of their own personality. 2026 is already shaping up to be promising for the isekai genre, with three major genre titles to look forward to this year.

For starters, the fourth season of anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was previously announced with a five-cours (a block of episodes) airing schedule that is set to begin in April. There’s also the fourth season of Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, slated for an April release on Crunchyroll. If these announcements weren’t exciting enough, we also have Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation coming back in July with its highly anticipated third season.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is the most popular (and the most controversial) out of the three, sporting an unsavory shut-in protagonist who is reincarnated into a world where sorcery exists. While our unnamed lead embraces a new identity as Rudeus Greyrat, his innate tendency to indulge in predatory behavior sours the narrative at several points. Nonetheless, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation remains popular, thanks to Studio Bind’s strengths as an animation studio and the series’ ability to craft a compelling fantasy setting. A teaser visual was also released alongside news of the series’ upcoming return.

If the problematic undertones of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation aren’t your cup of tea, both Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime are worth diving into. Re:Zero revolves around Subaru Natsuki, who gains the ability to rewind time under unique circumstances after he gets transported to another world. This proves to be an incredibly taxing ability, as Re:Zero trades the freedom associated with isekai for horrific trauma, as Subaru must constantly remake fate (often at the cost of his own life) to keep his loved ones safe.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is the most lighthearted entry here, as this adventure revamps Satoru Mikami after he takes on the mantle of the blue-haired, sword-wielding Rimuru Tempest. This is a story about the acute loss of identity, along with the tender hope that a reincarnated soul can find themselves again while forging unbreakable bonds in a world fundamentally different from their own.

2026 might not be the year of the isekai (considering the explosive popularity of titles like Jujutsu Kaisen and the newly-released Sentenced to be a Hero), but it will certainly plate up a variety of isekai narratives for newcomers and genre veterans alike.
