The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom Anime Reveals First Teaser and Mixed Fan Reactions Due to Art Style and Timing of Adaptation

Kadokawa Anime’s YouTube channel has released the first teaser trailer for The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom, the upcoming anime adaptation of Puni-chan’s light novel series. The show was previously announced in August 2025 and is set to premiere in January 2026.

You can watch the teaser below:

This adaptation carries some significance as it’s one of the earliest “villainess” light novels to gain popularity in Japan, long before the subgenre exploded in recent years. Despite that legacy, it’s taken nearly a decade for the story to get an anime version, even as newer titles inspired by it have already made it to TV.

However, fans are divided on the teaser. Many are happy to see the adaptation finally happen, but some feel the art direction looks noticeably different from the novel and manga. The reaction online has been a mix of excitement and concern.

For context, you can check some snippets of the artwork from the manga below:

And here is a key visual of the anime which was released back with the release window announcement:

As you can see, there are some differences in the art style of the anime adaptation, and with the manga having been received well in Japan with more than a dozen volumes and counting, fans have some expectations tied to the adaptation.

The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom follows a Japanese woman reincarnated as Tiararose Lapis Clementille, the villainess of an otome game called Lapis Lazuli Ring. In the game’s story, she’s doomed to exile after losing favour with her fiancé. Just as her fate seems sealed, she’s unexpectedly saved a prince from a neighbouring kingdom who declares her his fiancée.

The series is based on the light novels written by Puni-chan and illustrated by Akeno Naruse. It began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2016 before being published by Enterbrain’s B’s Log Bunko, which currently has 14 volumes. The manga adaptation by Hoshina has 16 volumes, and a visual novel version released for Nintendo Switch and PC in March 2024.

The anime is produced by Studio Deen, directed by Takayuki Hamana, with scripts by Yoshimi Narita and character designs by Majiro.
