It’d be fair to say 8BitDo knows a fair bit about peripherals, but this one still caught us by surprise. The 8BitDo Retro 87 Xbox Edition is a mechanical gaming keyboard inspired by Microsoft’s original, monolithic black box.
While it doesn’t work with a 2001 Xbox, it does work with Windows via a 2.4 GHz connection and any Bluetooth devices you may have, while there’s a USB-C port for charging and wired connectivity. Better yet, it’s almost half price, despite dropping to $99.99 on Prime Day. Now? It’s $64.99.

That deal can be found at WOOT!, an Amazon company, which means you get free Standard shipping with your Prime membership and can check out via your Amazon account.
While it has a nineties/early 2000s vibe, it’s surprisingly modern. Its 87 keys include a handy Xbox Button for Game Bar on Windows, while you’ll also find a hot-swappable PCB and n-key rollover.
The transparent outer shell is a nice touch, as are the colored arrow keys which correspond with the original A, B, X, and Y buttons on the Xbox’s ‘Duke’ pad. There’s an RGB backlight with a series of modes, too.
I love a mechanical keyboard, but the UK side of the deal isn’t quite as enticing. It’s cheaper, with 26% off at Amazon, but it’s still over £70. Maybe one day, but for now I’ll keep switching between my Lemokey and Keychron options.
