This may be a sleeper hit.

Just about every day, I receive emails about upcoming Steam indies and new demos, and I download them for a time when I can get around to playing them.

Earlier this week I got an email about a demo for a game called Dino Topia, so I downloaded it, and just got around to trying it out for the first time. I’m happy to report that it’s legitimately Cult of the Lamb, but with dinosaurs, and it’s awesome.

For those who missed out on the Cult of the Lamb hype, the cute, base-building roguelike was a massive hit when it launched in August 2022 from Devolver Digital and Massive Monster, and it’s one of the more satisfying and fun casual games in recent years.

Dino Topia has the same exact formula—build a base to farm materials and house your residents, who are dinosaurs, and go out on roguelike expeditions to advance the story, recruit new dinos, and get more materials.

This game swaps the lamb for a caveperson, and swaps the cute animals for cute dinosaurs, and the gameplay allows you to bring up to three dinos with you on your adventure as you fight your way through dungeons to find new dinos and more.

Cult of the Lamb (and from what I’ve played, Dino Topia too) scratches a really niche itch when it comes to building your base, breeding allies, populating your base with them and putting them to work, and supplementing it all with exploratory combat in changing environments with randomized power-ups to pick up along the way. It seems like a solid investment for Cult of the Lamb fans when it drops next month.
