Embark in a lo-fi fantasy campaign with this Ghibli-inspired setting
If you ever thought that, rather than studying, the famous Lofi Girl is actually rolling up Dungeons & Dragons characters or planning the next session, then Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is surely the campaign setting she’s using. This whimsical and mysterious setting is inspired by Studio Ghibli movies and promises a lo-fi fantasy experience for D&D fans who want to chill at the table. It’s also currently 20% off on D&D Beyond as part of the Cyber Monday sale.
On the island of Obojima, humans and spirits live in harmony within a landscape dotted with mysterious technological objects from the ’80s. If Stranger Things‘ final season isn’t enough to sate your thirst for ’80s-inspired D&D, then things like VHS and vending machines (which you can also buy as merchandise from the official website) surely will. But what truly dominates this setting and makes it so unforgettable are the Ghibli aesthetics. From silly witches to ramen-cooking Oni, you will find no end of whimsical and charming creatures here.
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass comes from 1985 Games, an amazing indie TTRPG company that also launched the Dungeon Craft terrain system in 2019. The digital version of the book is on sale for $31.99 (was $39.99) on D&D Beyond, while you can buy the beautiful hardcover version on the official Obojima website for $49.99. It includes:
- 3 new species options, like the mysterious Dara and the frog-like Nakudama.
- 2 new skills: break and fix things with Mechanics, or find ingredients and parts with Salvaging.
- 20 new feats, including sword-fighting, species evolutions, and faction feats.
- 48 new magic items, like keytars, lunar weapons, even flame-trail-leaving bicycles.
- 50 new spells: use Jolt to power ancient machines back to life, make weapons out of vegetables, sculpt sand to your whim, or even create magical train stops.
- 60 new monsters and NPCs: spirit companions, legendary monsters, corrupted creatures, and more.
- 11 new subclasses: origami-wielding wizards, mask-wearing bards, potion-brewing barbarians, and the Obojima community-created sheep dragon monk.
- A brand new, one-of-a-kind potion-brewing system that can be seamlessly integrated into other campaigns. Includes over 60 ingredients and 180 new potions.
D&D Beyond’s Cyber Monday sale includes more third-party goodies, such as Free League’s The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying for $31.99 (was $39.99), and Mage Hand Press’s Valda’s Spire of Secrets: Player Pack for $11.99 (was $14.99). If you prefer Wizards of the Coast’s mainline products, then Princes of the Apocalypse is also on sale for $14.99 (was 24.99), along with Candlekeep Mysteries, which comes at $59.95 for the digital+physical bundle (was $79.94).
