The Sandman is returning to its nightmarish dreamworld in the summer of 2025 for what will sadly be the final season of the fantasy series. As with all good dreams, the journey of Morpheus and the Endless will come to an end this year, and with it, bring the epic fantasy Netflix series to a close after only two seasons. Now, the series’ showrunner, Allan Heinberg, has finally cleared up the rumors that the show ending after only 2 seasons was a direct result of the allegations made against co-creator Neil Gaiman.
Based on the best-selling comic book series created by Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, the adaptation was released on Netflix in 2022 and was well-received by fans and critics alike. However, in spite of this, Heinberg confirmed that the show was only ever going to run for two seasons, with Dream being the focus rather than diving into other characters from the source material. The cancellation of the series comes on the heels of sexual harassment allegations against creator Neil Gaiman, who has since left Amazon’s final season of Good Omens TV adaptation and has also been dropped by his longtime comic book publisher, Dark Horse. Season 2 of The Sandman will be a sad farewell for its loyal fanbase, but before its last season airs, Heinberg reveals exactly why its doors are closing.

The Sandman Showrunner Reveals Why the Netflix Fantasy Show Is Ending After 2 Seasons
According to Entertainment Weekly, The Sandman TV show creator, Allan Heinberg, revealed that the decision to end the Netflix series after only two seasons was made a long time before the allegations against original comic book series creator Neil Gaiman came to light. Heinberg explained that the decision was “made years ago,” and it was always the choice to end on Dream’s narrative from the source material. “There are some volumes where he just appears in two scenes. There’s so many protagonists in Sandman, but you think of the whole thing as his story,” said Heinberg. “It turned out to be about another season’s worth of story, without leaving out anybody’s favorite moments or scenes.”
“So it’s been in the periphery of my experience and the background of my experience, but it hasn’t been part of the world of the making of the show, if that makes sense.”
Heinberg said that even though The Sandman closing its doors after season 2 was “unfortunate timing, for sure,” due to the allegations against Gaiman at the same time, he revealed that it hadn’t “affected our process, which is scheduled years in advance. These are your delivery dates and you just keep going.” Last year, five women came forward with allegations of previously being sexually harassed, abused, and assaulted by Gaiman. Unfortunately, even though Heinberg revealed the real reason why the series was cancelled, season 2 of The Sandman will always be cloaked by the allegations against Gaiman, even if the decision to end the series came years before.
The Sandman Season 2’s final outing is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in the summer of 2025.
