Valve does nothing and wins, again, as Escape From Tarkov caves and announces Steam relase

Lord Gaben’s mercy is again requested by a weary publisher, who is eager to bring its games into Valve’s digital store. This time, it’s Escape From Tarkov, a game which previously only ran within its own client. The release date is TBA, but at least we know it’s coming.

After previously teasing a potential Steam release, Tarkov developer and Battlestate Games chief Nikita Buyanov confirmed via X that the popular (and controversial) extraction shooter is coming to Gabe’s virtual kingdom. Buyanov did not specify a release date, but since Tarkov is getting its 1.0 release on Nov. 15, it could possibly coincide with that date. Nothing is certain yet, however, but it’s good to know the game is finally moving to a more approachable storefront.

Escape From Tarkov could previously only be purchased and played via the game’s own client, much akin to many games from several years back. Eastern European live-service games in particular had a knack for running their own clients and servers, with the likes of World of Tanks, War Thunder, and others doing the same. However, much like their Western colleagues, everyone slowly crept back to Steam one way or another, with Battlestate Games following suit.

Escape From Tarkov is a popular, and controversial, extraction shooter which contributed significantly to the popularization of this shooter subgenre. Players are put on a massive map for a “raid,” and must combat each other and NPCs to reach the extraction point and leave with hard-earned loot. Any and all equipment can be lost if your character dies, with perma-death systems put in place to ensure that character is gone for good.

It’s getting its full release on Nov. 15, which should expand what’s already a pretty big package.
