Walking Dead creator wants Magic: The Gathering to adapt his superhero franchise Invincible

In 2020, Wizards of the Coast changed the trajectory of Magic: The Gathering when it released a series of new cards set in the world of The Walking Dead, the franchise based on the long-running comic book series from Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. Now, in a video interview ahead of the March 18 premiere of Invincible season 4 on Prime Video, Kirkman tells Polygon he’d love to see his superhero series get the same treatment.

“I mean, I’m interested,” Kirkman says. “If you know some people at Wizards of the Coast, we can set something.”

The Walking Dead was the first of Magic’s limited release Secret Lair drops to feature entirely original cards rather than reprints of existing ones with alternate art based on popular IP. It set the stage for Universes Beyond, the company’s name for sets tied to highly non-Magic franchises like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Final Fantasy. While some players don’t like seeing the game become the cardboard equivalent of Fortnite, the huge commercial success of these crossovers has led to them dominating the game’s release schedule.

While Wizards of the Coast might have to tone down the gore for an Invincible set, it would otherwise be a natural fit for the game thanks to the franchise’s sprawling world of superheroes, terrifying villains, and various alien species. Meanwhile, the company has already struck a deal with Marvel that kicked off with the release of a Spider-Man set in 2025 and will continue with Marvel Super Heroes in June 2026.

An Invincible set could use many of the same mechanics emphasized in the Marvel sets. Transform could represent secret identities or literally transforming characters such as Monster Girl, while Sagas could be used for key arcs such as the Invincible War, which would presumably unleash a horde of Invincible tokens when completed. For the space-based aspects of Invincible, Magic could borrow rules from Edge of Eternities. Magic is adding sets based on The Hobbit and Star Trek in 2026, but maybe 2027 will be the year we all build Invincible commander decks.

Invincible season 4 premieres on Prime Video on March 18. New episodes will release weekly on Wednesdays through April 22.
