PEAK’s Roots update introduces some of the most helpful items we’ve seen in the game so far. From flags that give you respawn checkpoints to the mysterious Book of Bones with transformative powers, reaching the mountain’s peak just became even easier.

How to find the Book of Bones in PEAK

The Book of Bones is a Mythical item that can appear within Ancient luggage bags and at any Ancient Statue atop a level’s peak. Each time you open this luggage bag or interact with the statue, there’s a chance you’ll find the Book of Bones as a reward.

The only downside is that PEAK has multiple Mythical items you can obtain through these two methods. There’s a chance you’ll instead find anti-rope, cure-all, and other resources instead. If you’re looking for the Book of Bones for the Applied Esoterica badge, you may have to reset your expedition a few times until you find it.

You’ll know you’ve found the Book of Bones when you see a purple book with purple swirling particles coming out of it. These particles still appear even if the book is in your backpack, so you won’t be able to hide it from your friends.

What does the Book of Bones do in PEAK?

The Book of Bones has two main purposes, depending on whether you’re in a singleplayer or multiplayer lobby:

  • In singleplayer, you can pick up and read the Book of Bones to transform yourself into a skeleton.
  • In multiplayer, you can either read the Book of Bones yourself or use it on a dead teammate to revive them into a skeleton. Doing this rewards you with the Applied Esoterica badge.

Becoming a skeleton gives you immunity to nearly every damage type at the cost of a hefty curse effect that takes up around a fifth of your stamina bar. You’ll also become much more vulnerable to fall damage, zombie attacks, and dynamite explosions.

While you’ll still be able to survive zombie bites without much trouble, fall damage can now kill you very easily, even from short distances. Using items like balloons and a parasol can help reduce the damage you take, but you’ll still need to watch out just in case. You can also plant a Checkpoint Flag if you’re about to take some risks and think there’s a chance you’ll fall to your death.
