What If the Gloom Isn’t Made of Terminid Spores? Helldivers 2 Players Suggest an Eerie Theory

Hang on tight, it’s time for another undemocratic theory! Helldivers are finally venturing into the Gloom, and seeing the “Gloomed” bugs up close, some players started doubting the information that Super Earth had fed them. Many Helldivers 2 players came up with a similar theory about the spores that are supposedly of Terminid origin. Are they? Or is something else spreading through the galaxy?

Helldivers Have a Theory About “Those” Spores

As you know, the Gloom appeared a while ago, over the summer. It started out on a few planets and spread quickly. The Gloom “swallowed” planets one after another until it spread over the majority of the Terminid territory.

Super Earth scientists have been claiming that the Gloom is made up of Terminid spores, which the bugs used to propagate. Helldivers didn’t have any reasons not to believe the scientists. That is until they recently came face-to-face with what lies in the Gloom.

Weeks ago, when the leakers released images of Spore Burst bugs, players thought that the bugs looked the way they did because the light didn’t reach them through the thick Gloom. However, the players think something more sincere is at play after seeing these bugs in person.

So, without further ado, what do the players suggest? Well, there are several very similar theories out there, but they are all based on the same idea. Those spores that make up the Gloom aren’t of Terminid origin, they are fungal spores. That would mean that all those bugs are infected, and the Gloom is an entity on its own, not connected to the unfortunate bugs.

Fans of The Last of Us already know where this theory is headed. There is a genus of fungi called Cordyceps, which is known to infect insects and turn them into zombies of sorts. These fungi then “sprout” from their host, grow and release spores. Who better to explain this process than David Attenborough?

Now, if you look at the picture of Spore Burst bugs, doesn’t it look like something similar is growing on them? Not to mention that they explode and spread even more spores once they’re killed.

Players Elaborate on the Theory

Of course, Helldivers 2 players offered their own twists and further elaborated on this theory about Cordyceps spores. Some players even offered plausible ideas on where these fungi could have come from.

One player, heyitsthatguy0203, noted: “What if the Terminids are unwilling carriers of a new pathogen? What if the Squids orchestrated this to split our efforts from them. It could be a masterful gambit or sheer luck. Or this whole mess is the nerd scientists’ fault and we’re just on clean-up duty. Either way, I don’t think the Terminids have anything to do with what’s happening to them”.

Now, as you know, for a hundred years (since the First Galactic War), Super Earth citizens have been farmed. Then, they became aggressive and the Second Galactic War started. One player, Jaydonius, explained: “The spores reprogram the mental functionality of the Terminids to become even more hostile, that way, there’s more biomass to consume, or, to die and spread more of their spores around the planet”.

The more we research, the more plausible this theory seems. That gives us one more reason to try as hard as we can and complete the Major Order – those bugs need to be liberated! Not to mention that Fori Prime is somehow still 0% liberated. So, join us there, we’ll be liberating as many bugs as we can. For Liberty and Super Earth.
