What You Need To Know About PlayStation Plus

What You Need To Know About PlayStation Plus

Sony’s PlayStation Plus is a well-known brand with a long history, but the service received a substantial makeover in 2022. Combining the original version with PS Now, the platform adopted a tiered system that seemed designed to offer something equivalent to Xbox Game Pass, with the higher levels containing extensive libraries of games that are updated monthly.

Although not without its controversies or criticisms, PS Plus has stabilized by this point, making it a consistently valid option for PS5 and even PS4 owners. As the service offers a lot of content along with different price points and features, here are the major things everyone should know about PS Plus.

Updated on January 30, 2025 by Mark Sammut: PS Plus Essential games for February 2025 have been announced. Consequently, that section has been updated to reflect this new information.

All The PlayStation Plus Tiers

Rather than present a one-size-fits-all subscription, PS Plus lets users have their pick from three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Here is a summary of each level’s offerings:

  • Essential – The core PS Plus benefits as they were prior to the 2022 relaunch. Subscribers gain access to online multiplayer, monthly games, exclusive discounts, and a few other benefits.
  • Extra – Essential tier benefits + a catalog of downloadable PS5 and PS4 games.
  • Premium – Essential & Extra tiers benefits + a catalog of classic PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games.

Ultimately, picking a PS Plus tier comes down to someone’s needs. If a player will only be using the online multiplayer feature, Essential will suffice and there is little to gain from subscribing to one of the higher tiers.

Premium’s central selling is its Classics Catalog, which adds hundreds of titles on top of the PS5 and PS4 games that are also available in the Extra tier. While this collection is grand, please note that PS3 games are played through Cloud Streaming and cannot be downloaded. Consequently, their performance is dependent on the user’s internet connection.

PS Plus Premium subscribers also have the option to stream games via the service’s PC app. The library includes titles from both the Games and Classics Catalog, although it is not the full selection. Here are some things interested parties should know about this option:

  • The DualShock 4 is the only confirmed compatible controller. That does not mean other controllers will not work, just that they are not guaranteed by Sony.
  • PS Plus On PC is not currently available in every country that has the main streaming service.
  • PS5 games cannot be streamed.
  • A PS5 or PS4 is not needed to subscribe to PS Plus on PC.
  • Sony recommends a Broadband wired internet connection of a minimum of 5 Mbps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PS Plus Premium Subscribers Stream PS5 Games?

PS Plus Premium’s Cloud Streaming is compatible with the Games Catalog’s PS4 games and all the titles found in the Classics Catalog. PS5 games cannot be streamed.

Sony has not specified a fixed date of when subscribers can anticipate new additions to the library, but history suggests that games will be added roughly halfway through a month.

Can Subscribers Switch Tiers?

Yes. If someone wants to move up to a higher PS Plus tier, they only need to purchase a new membership at their desired level. This upgrade will happen instantly, and the customer will be charged a prorated fee for the rest of the current month.

If a member wishes to downgrade their tier, they would need to visit their Sony account’s “Subscription” tab to perform the change. This alteration will come into effect once the next payment is made.

Can PS Plus Benefits Be Shared?

While limited to one PS5 or PS4 console, certain PS Plus benefits are shared among the different accounts on the system. These include online multiplayer, access to Premium & Extra’s libraries, downloaded monthly games, and games purchased using a PS Plus discount.

Which PlayStation Plus should I Get?

Ultimately, this comes down to personal preference. If someone only intends to play PS5 and PS4 games, there is little reason to subscribe to Premium.

PS Plus Essential Free Games For February 2025

These PS Plus Essential games will be available from February 4 to March 3, 2025.

While PS Plus Extra and Premium had a pretty good January 2025, Essential’s lineup garnered a fairly lukewarm reception. Its successor, February 2025, is almost identical, with the month including a polarizing headline game alongside two smaller but relatively well-liked titles. The former is Payday 3, a long-awaited sequel that should be one of the biggest multiplayer co-op games on the market.

Despite improving a few things like stealth, the 2023 game has arguably not been a resounding success so far. Its predecessor still has a (significantly) larger community on Steam, and Payday 3 has had a difficult time convincing fans to adopt it. Still, as far as heist-based games are concerned, this title is an option that is, at the minimum, worthy of a download.

From one of the creators responsible for Rick and Morty, High on Life is a sci-fi FPS with an aggressive sense of humor. While the gameplay is mostly serviceable, the game’s value to a player will almost certainly come down to their appreciation of its comedy, which is ever-present and unapologetically edgy. That is not a negative or a positive statement, but just an objective one. PS Plus Essential February 2025’s final game is Pac-Man World: Re-Pac, which is a remake of a PS1 1999 platformer. The title looks nice, plays relatively well, and has enough quality-of-life adjustments to not feel outdated.

  • MediEvil 2 (PS1)

PS Plus Extra and Premium’s January 2025 games picked up the slack for Essential’s selection, offering an impressive range of projects across a spectrum of genres. Although hardly the only exciting addition, God of War Ragnarok is far and away the month’s biggest game, with Santa Monica’s highly regarded sequel making its long-awaited debut on the subscription service. With the 2018 entry already being on PS Plus, Ragnarok‘s arrival completes Kratos’ Norse mythology saga, along with serving as a satisfying conclusion to the character’s legacy if he does not return as a protagonist in the future. The base game looks and plays great, all the while telling an over-the-top story that culminates in the eponymous event. The Valhalla mode is also brilliant and should be played after the story.

PS Plus Premium Subscribers Will Have 11 New Games to Play on January 21

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will soon have 11 new games to play through their subscription.

The rest of Extra’s lineup consists of niche but mostly good games. Citizen Sleeper is an immersive RPG that focuses on dialogue and player choice, taking a lot of inspiration from tabletop games. Atlas Fallen is an open-world action RPG with a fun combat system built around momentum. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is classic Yakuza, albeit with a short story that can be completed within about 15 hours. SD Gundam Battle Alliance is a serviceable hack-and-slash game with plenty of fanservice for fans of the mecha franchise.

The Premium tier’s January 2025 lineup consists of two games: MediEvil 2 and Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. These are both fun titles from yesteryear, with the former being a PS1 cult classic and the latter an enjoyable PS2 release.

  • Tales of Symphonia Remastered
  • Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

February 18 will mark a sad day for RPG fans as quite a few genre favorites will be leaving PS Plus. Recently, the subscription service has developed a habit of mass-clearing a franchise every month, and Bandai Namco’s Tales is the next one on the block. Four games will be saying goodbye, wiping out all the IP’s representatives. These games clock in at over 40 hours just to complete their main stories, a commitment that can be difficult to pull off in a couple of weeks. Still, if someone has been on the fence about trying Arise or maybe Vesperia, they should give them a try while they are still available. Complete newcomers can use this opportunity to see if Tales is a franchise they might wish to consider in the future.

Scarlet Nexus, another Bandai Namco action JRPG, is also leaving PS Plus in February 2025. A fresh 2021 IP, the game is generally highly regarded, particularly for its combat and dual-campaign structure. While completing both storylines by February 18 would be very challenging, one of the playthroughs can be done in around 30 hours, making Scarlet Nexus a candidate for a quick run-through before its departure.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition and Outriders round out the month’s RPG clearance, and both of them are very good in their own right. The former has great writing courtesy of Obsidian, while the latter has fun combat. The Outer Worlds is quite short too, so it might be the best bet for people looking for a game they want to complete before February 18. That said, Bulletstorm is also a fantastic FPS and under 10 hours.
