5-star characters are the rarest ones you can find in Persona 5 The Phantom X, and you can get up to two of them for free (and without having to rely on your luck).

While you can grind and earn resources to unlock contracts, it takes a significant amount of time if you’re playing free-to-play. Your best source of a guaranteed 5-star is in the form of Plans and the Beginner’s Banner. If you manage to complete Lufel’s Business Plan 1, you can pick one of three characters: Ann Tamamaki, Ryuji Sakamoto, and Morgana.

Let’s take a look at which one to pick among the three.

Which 5-star should you pick first in Persona 5 The Phantom X?

Before taking a look at the best pick, it’s essential to understand that you get not one but two 5-star character selectors. One of them is obtained by completing Plan 1, as I mentioned above. The second one is obtained when you pull on the Beginner’s Banner 50 times. You’ll need a total of 40 Golden Tickets to do so. Personally, completing five pulls on the beginner banner is easier.

Between the three, I will advise you to choose Ann Tamamaki ahead of the other two characters. Typically, a team comprises three roles along with a navigator. Out of these three spots, there has to be at least one leading DPS character who will take responsibility for dishing out damage.

At the time of the global launch, we have a special banner with Ren Amamiya (Joker) as a highlight character. He is, by some distance, the best DPS character to use. Joker dishes out incredible damage even at his base level and signature weapon. However, you’ll have to get lucky to find him.

The best alternative is to use your 5-star selector for Ann Takamaki, aka Panther. She’s not as good as Ren and will also require her signature weapon in the long run. However, she’s one of the best characters to pick for free. She’s genuinely good at both clearing story content and bosses, so let’s look more at her abilities.

Ability Name Cost Effect
Crimson Rose 20 SP Deal Fire damage to all foes equal to 94.8% of Attack, and increase Ann’s Attack by 20% for 2 turns. When Ann has La Vie en Rose, for 2 turns, decrease foes’ Attack by 8% of Ann’s Attack and increase her Attack by the same amount.
Trifire 20 SP Deal Fire damage to 1 foe equal to 134.2% of Attack, with 75% chance to inflict Burn. When Ann has La Vie en Rose, and the foe’s HP is below 50%, deal 30% bonus damage.
Falling Sun 22 SP Deal Fire damage to all foes equal to 96.3% of Attack, with 30% chance to inflict Burn. When Ann has La Vie en Rose, deal 30% more damage.
Thief Tactics Ultimate Deal Fire damage to all foes equal to 195.2% of Attack. Increase damage of Ann’s Fire skills by 78.1% for 1 turn.
Rising Tension Passive Activate a Fire technical when using a skill or Highlight. When Fireburn activates, increase that skill or Highlight‘s damage by 30.0%.
Carrot and Stick Passive When La Vie en Rose ends, restore HP to the ally with the lowest remaining HP by 45.0% of Ann’s Attack.

Ann is well suited against mobs due to her AOE attacks, and also against bosses due to her single-strike abilities. Her Highlight attack deals a lot of damage to all enemies alive, while buffing her for the next turn. Considering how easy it is to obtain her, she’s the clear favorite. If you do end up pulling Ren, you can opt for Morgana for better team-building and synergy.
