“You Call This a Collector’s Edition?” The Absence of Physical Discs in Death Stranding 2 or Ghost of Yotei Packs Upsets Fans

Collector’s Editions are usually the largest and most expensive packs when it comes to games, including both the essentials and a ton of exclusive goodies. So it came as a great surprise when the players realized that the Collector’s Edition for both Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei are diskless, ie, there are no physical discs inside, only a code for a digital download. Naturally, the fans are a bit upset.

Things are pretty great for PlayStation fans. First, Death Stranding 2 was released a couple of days ago, which lived up to the expectations and delivered Kojima’s signature high-quality story and gameplay (and a bit more, in some cases). And second, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is getting closer, as the official release is scheduled for October. Both of these games are at the top of wishlists everywhere; however, they both share another not-so-great fact. They both lack a physical disk in their most expensive Editions.

No Physical Disks in Death Stranding 2 or Ghost of Yotei Collector’s Edition Does Not Sit Well With the Fans

Collector’s Editions are usually packed with exclusive goods for the most dedicated (or well-off) fans. They often include disks packed in the special Steelbook cases, digital extras, in-game benefits, and some exclusive collector’s items, like figurines, replicas, and the like. For example, the Collector’s Edition for Ghost of Yotei includes a replica of the mask from the game, the Tsuba from Atsu’s sword, and even the coin pouch for the Zeni Hajiki game.

As for Death Stranding 2, its Collector’s Edition includes a ton of in-game items, a letter from Mr. Kojima himself, a small Dollman figurine, and a huge 15” Magellan Man statue. They are both priced somewhere between $230-250, so it is not exactly cheap. And that is why the players got pretty upset when they realized that both lack, not just a Steelbook, but a whole physical copy.

The Collector’s Edition for Ghost of Yotei was revealed only yesterday, on June 30, and the fans quickly voiced their dissatisfaction. You can see comments like “The fact that the collectors edition only gives you the digital version of the game is a no from me.” and “I would’ve pre ordered the collectors edition if it came with a PHYSICAL game”.

There were talks about whether Sony wants to go all diskless in the future, but those claims were dismissed by their former CEO, so it is quite a surprise that they decided not to include physical copies in these Collector’s Edition, especially after the fact that there is already a physical disk for Death Stranding 2, and that physical disk for Ghost of Yotei is up for preorder.

Quite a weird decision by Sony that already has a negative impact on the community. What is the reasoning behind it? The people for go for Collector’s Editions are usually, well, collectors themselves, meaning they most likely have a collection of physical disks and Steelbooks, and want to add another one. You’d think that these collectors are the target audience, but it looks like Sony has different ideas.
