Attack on Titan ran for four seasons, ended in 2023, and left a lot of people with opinions about the finale. Whether those opinions are positive or not, most fans would agree the first two seasons hold up reasonably well — the mystery of what’s in the basement, the slow drip of information about the titans, and the fairly brutal approach to killing off characters made it more compelling than a lot of action anime at the time.
Two minutes on the clock. Give it a go.
What Is Attack on Titan?
Attack on Titan is a manga series by Hajime Isayama that ran from 2009 to 2021. The anime adaptation, produced by Wit Studio for the first three seasons and MAPPA for the fourth, aired between 2013 and 2023. It follows Eren Yeager, a teenager living inside a walled city in a world where giant humanoid creatures called titans roam outside. The walls have kept humanity safe for a century. Then one day they don’t.
The early premise is fairly simple as it shows that the characters have to survive, join the military, fight titans. What kept people watching was the gradual revelation that the world is more complicated than it first appears. Answers arrive slowly, usually attached to new questions, and the story eventually moves into territory that is quite different from where it started. How satisfying you find that journey depends a lot on your tolerance for a story that shifts its tone and focus significantly as it progresses.
The Anime’s Run
The first season aired in 2013 and picked up a large audience fairly quickly. Season two followed in 2017, shorter than expected but well-regarded. Season three came in two parts across 2018 and 2019, and is generally considered the point where the story’s larger ambitions became clearer. Season four, the final one, aired in parts from 2020 to 2023 and was divisive not just for its ending, but for the narrative direction it took in the second half.
It’s a show that people have strong feelings about, which is more than can be said for a lot of anime. The production across its run was uneven particularly in Season four, as the demands of adapting the final arc created some noticeable inconsistencies. But the core of the show, particularly its early seasons, did enough right to earn the attention it got.
So, How Did You Do?
If you got most of them right, you were paying attention. If a couple caught you out, it probably just means the show has been off the air long enough that the details have faded, which is fair enough given the timeline.
Share your score if you feel like it. It’s a decent enough talking point, especially with people who have very different feelings about how the whole thing ended.
