Following earlier gameplay teaser trailers, developer IO Interactive has made some changes to the dialogue in 007 First Light.
Back in September, IOI released a 20 minute gameplay trailer for its Bond origin game, giving us a look at the newly-appointed spy on his first mission. In this mission, Bond is working undercover as a chauffeur, and needs to park his vehicle before waiting for his fellow agents to finish their various bits of espionage. However, while this footage whetted our appetites with grand set pieces and stealthy gameplay, one thing in particular caught the attention of indie developer Joe Wintergreen.
“Unfortunately the new 007 game has Bond say ‘parking lot’. Sorry everyone, I know we all had our hopes up,” Wintergreen wrote on Bluesky following First Light’s gameplay reveal. Parking lot is, of course, American English. And, James Bond really should fall into the British English category, what with him being her majesty’s (or, in this case, his majesty’s) best agent.
But fast forward to today, and the recent release of 007 First Light. It turns out that IO clearly clocked the ‘parking lot’ discourse, and has changed the offending dialogue to the British ‘car park’ in the final game. Huzzah!
A representative from IOI told Eurogamer it decided to make this change to “reinforce the immersion within the mission”. So to semi quote Roger Moore’s Bond from The Spy Who Loved Me, IOI is keeping the British end up, sir, and I love to see it.
