You gain access to the Monorail shortly after you arrive in Australia. Setting up the Monorail is part of the main story once you reach West Fort Knot. Your first objective is to repair the mine and then use Chiral Crystals to make a bunch of Special Alloy. At this point, you then ship the cargo back to West Fort Knot.

How to Expand the Monorail

While having the monorail line set up between West Fort Knot and the mine is helpful, you get significantly more benefit from expanding the monorail to reach more parts of Australia. However, expanding the monorail beyond this point is not related to the story and is simply just a side objective you can pursue at your own pace.

As you explore the edges of Australia, you will see metal poles called Tracklayers. Just like with the terminals that build roads, inserting materials into Tracklayers will build additional rails for the monorail. Tracklayers require Chiral Crystals, Resin, and Special Alloy, and the amount needed will vary.

Tracklayers you build can also be used as Ziplines.

For instance, some Tracklayers will require 400 Chiral Crystals, 640 Resin, and 720 Special Alloy to create a new monorail track. You will also find some other tracks that require significantly less resources (40 Chiral Crystals, 40 Resin, and 120 Special Alloy). The best way to quickly expand the monorail is to load up the Pickup Off-Roader with as much Resin and Special Alloy as you can and then gradually drive from Tracklayer to Tracklayer.

If you aren’t certain where to find the next Tracklayer, follow the direction the rails are going in.

Once you’ve expanded the monorail enough, you will unlock additional stops, and you will be able to get around Australia much quicker. In fact, Main Order 20 is much easier to complete if you have the Monorail set up to go all the way from F2 South Distribution Center to West Fort Knot, as all you have to do is load the cargo onto the monorail and then send it south.
