As the Summer 2026 anime season has yet to kick off, the dedicated broadcast time slot has yet to be determined.
While some fans of the manga would love to see the fictional Iron Senpai 4 game make an appearance in our world, animation studio Diomedea has had more exciting plans. It turns out that last year’s delay in the anime’s debut has been well worth the wait, as, owing to its partnership with Capcom, the Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games anime adaptation is set to show off in-game footage from the latest mainline addition to the Street Fighter video game franchise. As we can tell from the live-action web drama Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games, this earlier take on the manga features Street Fighter 5, having aired just before the most recent entry in the game series.
Now, fans will get to see Aya, Mio, Yu, and Tamaki take their fight club deeper into the legendary fighting game franchise. By the looks of the promotional materials and collaboration visuals, they are about to main some fine picks from the evolving tier list of Street Fighter 6 in the upcoming anime series, including Luke, Ryu, Cammy, and Juri.
A Step Away From the In-Universe Fighting Game
No matter how awesome Iron Senpai 4 might feel to some fans of the manga, it’s still an entirely non-existent counterpart of the earlier gems in the Street Fighter franchise. Besides the obvious copyright issues, manga artist Eri Ejima wanted to feel free while immersing fans of the manga in the world of fighting games. Not wanting to cut corners on the story, the studio seems to have given itself the creative liberty to partner with Capcom, embracing and expanding the welcoming vibe of Street Fighter 6. Adding authentic high-quality in-game fighting footage will no doubt make for a memorable season.
Diomedea’s Possible Game Plan for Episode 1
With an expected pace of covering about two to three manga chapters per episode, the new Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games anime adaptation will include plenty of high-octane action and a deeper dive into the story compared with its live-action predecessor. The start of the manga introduces us to Kuromi Girls’ Academy students Aya Mitsuki and Mio Yorue. As Chapter 1 lets us in on the school’s vicious anti-gaming stance, we get to see Aya, a commoner who depends on a scholarship, discover a carefully shrouded side to her fellow schoolmate Mio. Being the school’s idol who goes by the nickname of Shirayuri, highlighting her utmost grace and elegance, Mio comes from a very affluent family and has a reputation to uphold at the school. Her real self, however, comes out when she feels free to use her other nickname, Gemma, a girl with a savage taste for fighting games. Uncovering what Mio secretly enjoys in ways a proper lady wouldn’t dare to try in an abandoned classroom, she starts to form a bond with the school’s celebrity against all odds.
