Pokemon GO: Should You Choose Mega Mewtwo X or Y? (Genetic Mastery Guide)

Pokemon GO Fest: Global 2026 is happening right now and will close at 7 PM local time tonight. The big deal with the event is that players can take on free Timed Research called Genetic Mastery that ends with a Mega Energy reward for evolving Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y (it all depends on which branching path you take!).

Why Can’t I See the Genetic Mastery Timed Research in Pokemon GO?

If you’re playing Pokemon GO right now and are having trouble finding the Genetic Mastery research to get your Mega Mewtwo, you might be in the wrong section.

To find it, click on the binoculars in the bottom-right corner of the main map screen, then hit the Research tab, and then choose Events. Since this is not your regular research, it’ll appear there. It should be right underneath the Global Challenge section.

Should You Choose Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?

To get right to it, if you’re looking for the best Pokemon for Raids and other battles in Pokemon GO, then it’s best to go with Mega Mewtwo Y. It’s a pure Psychic-type Pokemon, like the regular Mewtwo, and is pretty much an upgraded version with high raw damage output.

That being said, that doesn’t mean Mega Mewtwo X is a “bad” choice –both Pokemon can 100% hold their own in battle, but X has a lower base attack stat, and due to it also being a Fighting-type Pokemon, it can’t take full advantage of the typing.

Think of X as a jack-of-all-trades, master of none, while Y truly excels as a strong Psychic-type attacker. If you want to use Mega Mewtwo X as a Fighting-type Raid attacker, there are better Pokemon that can get the job done, such as Lucario.

When Does the Genetic Mastery Research Go Away?

The Genetic Mastery Timed Research in Pokemon GO will go away on Sunday, July 12, at midnight local time. So you must complete all the tasks to get the necessary Mega Energy for Mega Mewtwo X and Y.
