GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games in recent history, and the preorders certainly reflect that. Unsurprisingly, most people who preordered the game are splurging for the $100 Ultimate Edition, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed yesterday.
In an interview with CNBC, Zelnick said consumers are preordering both the $80 Standard Edition and the $100 Ultimate Edition of GTA 6, but they are “skewing more” toward the premium edition (Thanks, Eurogamer). This might be a reflection that the consumers who preorder are the most eager for the game, the CEO added.
The $100 Ultimate Edition comes with quite a ton of extra content, including cars, a garage, two mod shops, unique weapons, a boat, apparel, and dozens of exclusive tattoos. It’s quite the extra offering, and it’s no wonder it’s driving up demand.
The game already has an unprecedented number of preorders, Zelnick reiterated for CNBC—so much so that there’s no comparable point to use as a base of reference. Don’t expect a sale any time soon, though.
When asked if GTA 6 would get a discount, Zelnick didn’t explicitly deny a sale in time for Christmas, but he reiterated Take-Two maintained the price on GTA V for “a very long time, much longer than a standard release property.” Some retailers could drop the price, he said, but it would affect that company’s margins.
Last week, Zelnick said GTA 6‘s $80 base price tag was “phenomenal value,” indicating Rockstar and Take-Two could have pushed that price up even higher due to the hype surrounding it.
GTA is a legendary franchise. If you grew up with video games at any point in the past 30 years, odds are at least one of its titles is part of your childhood memories (“All we had to do was follow the damn train” still inflicts mental damage to me decades later). The long gap between installments also helps build hype for GTA 6. It’s closer to The Elder Scrolls rather than CoD, where any release is generational.
To put it in perspective: the mainline Destiny franchise (2014–2026) lived and died between GTA V and GTA 6. Trevor, Franklin, and Michael debuted in November 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, whereas the first Destiny only released in September 2014.
The next major development for GTA 6 is scheduled for Aug. 27, when a preview for the game will go live on Netflix. That announcement went about as well as one could expect—which is to say, not at all—but the video will remain exclusive to the streaming giant for only six hours. After that, it’s less than 100 days until the game launches on Nov. 19.
