It’s been nearly 10 years since the last StarCraft game, but a new title could finally be on the way.
According to South Korean newspaper Chosunilbo, Korean publisher Nexon is in talks with Blizzard to gain development rights for a sequel within the franchise, and a contract “is on the verge of being finalized” ahead of BlizzCon next weekend.
Via translation, the article conjectures that Nexon could potentially be the one to work on StarCraft 3, but any sort of game within the franchise is a possibility. This will surely raise eyebrows for some and excite others, as it’s been a long time coming.
It’s unclear what a potential partnership between Blizzard and Nexon would mean for the series, but the report’s source stated that “once this contract is completed, Nexon will hold the development rights for a sequel to the existing StarCraft.” The Korean company taking the reins of the franchise that truly exploded in the region seems like it would make sense, but it’s up to Blizzard owner Microsoft to decide full terms.
A long-rumored third-person shooter within the StarCraft universe is a possibility as well, but Blizzard has worked on and canceled several projects within the franchise over the years, including StarCraft: Ghost, a tactical stealth game for consoles. Could this finally be the time that the RTS franchise branches out into something different and unique?
The original StarCraft launched back in 1998, and StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty followed up in 2010, with its final DLC coming in 2016. StarCraft: Remastered in 2017 is the last release fans of the series have seen.
