This November, Godzilla is taking on his toughest opponent yet: GTA 6

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, an enhanced re-release of Pipeworks’ 2003 cult-classic monster brawler, isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to its release date. Set to launch on November 3, 2026, it is positioned just over two weeks shy of Grand Theft Auto VI.

This might look like one of the worst video game marketing decisions ever made. But Pipeworks and publisher Atari don’t seem worried, and their reasoning is pretty solid. In an interview with IGN, veteran Pipeworks developer Simon Strange, the lead character designer for Destroy All Monsters Melee and its sequels, had this to say:

If Atari had come to us and said, ‘Wow, we can’t because we think it’s going to affect the sales with GTA,’ we would’ve had that discussion. But no one ever said anything.”

For those not in the know, November 3 is a very special day for Godzilla. The original film was released on November 3, 1954, and the date is widely celebrated as “Godzilla Day” within the King of the Monsters fandom. And for Atari, it seems like releasing Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered to Godzilla fans on the G-Man’s big day is far more important than maximizing potential profit.

While it’s clear as day that Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered‘s sales won’t reach anything close to the heights GTA 6‘s are expected to, the two might just be neck-and-neck when it comes to fan engagement. Mere hours after its release date was announced, Godzilla fans flooded social media with memes pitting the King of the Monsters against Rockstar’s flagship series.

Of course, Destroy All Monsters Mecha Remastered isn’t a game meant to appeal to a wide audience like GTA 6. The original is a fairly niche release; beloved by Godzilla fans and fighting game enthusiasts, but relatively obscure within the greater gaming ecosystem.

With so many games abandoning their initial November 2026 release dates, it’s refreshing and fitting to see a Godzilla game of all things stand against the tide and stick to its initial launch window.
