Sephiroth, the notorious antagonist of Final Fantasy 7, will return to the franchise once Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22. Sephiroth will join Final Fantasy Resonance alongside several other iconic Final Fantasy characters, including his archrival Cloud Strife.
It’s no secret that, alongside Cloud, Sephiroth is one of the first characters that gamers think of whenever the Final Fantasy franchise is brought up. As a former SOLDER that was thought dead following the Nibelheim Incident, Sephiroth’s presence was a constant threat in both the original Final Fantasy 7 and the ongoing FF7 Remake saga. Between his dark origins and the powerful magic at his disposal, Sephiroth is a villain that overshadows the rest of Final Fantasy 7‘s main cast.
Sephiroth Will Descend Into Final Fantasy Resonance
Although Sephiroth will play a major role in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation come April 8, fans need not wait that long to see him rain down despair on the series again. Square Enix revealed that Sephiroth will be both a boss fight and a Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance. In a trailer revealed during the September 3 State of Play broadcast, Sephiroth made his fiery entrance. Though Final Fantasy Resonance is an HD-2D title from the developers of Octopath Traveler, the pixelated version of the One-Winged Angel is no less threatening. As of this writing, it is unclear how Sephiroth can be fought and obtained as a Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance. Sephiroth will join a roster of iconic Final Fantasy characters, some of whom are listed below:
- Warrior of Light
- Firion
- Onion Knight
- Cecil Harvey
- Bartz Klauser
- Terra Branford
- Cloud Strife
- Squall Leonhart
- Zidane Tribal
- Tidus
- Shantotto
- Vaan
- Lightning
- Y’shtola Rhul
- Noctis Lucis Caelum
- Clive Rosfield
The Visions of Final Fantasy Resonance fall into different roles that can affect the outcome of battle. For example, Final Fantasy 2 weapons master Firion is a Breaker who has elemental affinities for Thunder, Wind, and Holy magic. It is currently unclear what role and elemental affinities Sephiroth has, so players will have to discover those details for themselves once Final Fantasy Resonance hits store shelves. Along with Sephiroth’s return, Square Enix also stated that Final Fantasy Resonance‘s first chapter is now available as a free demo on all platforms. The studio also confirmed that progress made in the FF Resonance demo will carry over to the full game. Final Fantasy Resonance‘s free demo requires at least 5.4 GB of available storage space.
Sephiroth’s upcoming appearance in Final Fantasy Resonance is not the first time that the One-Winged Angel has shown up outside the Final Fantasy 7 compilation. Sephiroth was also a playable villain in the Dissidia Final Fantasy spin-off series as a dark foil to Cloud. Arguably, Sephiroth’s most iconic cameo outside the Final Fantasy franchise is in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC fighter. Sephiroth’s arrival in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also included the Northern Cave as a stage.
Between the return to turn-based combat and the various callbacks from the franchise’s long history, Final Fantasy Resonance looks to be a nostalgia trip for fans old and new to enjoy. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Final Fantasy 14: Evercold also releasing in the coming months, Final Fantasy fans will have no shortage of content to go through.
