Prime Video’s Fallout is a runaway success for Amazon, with the first season racking up over 100 million views. The TV show’s initial run was also a critical hit, garnering 17 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Ghoul actor Walton Goggins. The second season generally received positive reviews, and anticipation is high for the currently in-production third season of Fallout.
Naturally, Amazon MGM wants to capitalize on Fallout‘s success and is readying a spinoff: a game show that seems to fundamentally misunderstand the thing it is based on. On Friday, Amazon dropped the first teaser for Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, a reality competition series that’s headed to Prime Video early next year.
While the teaser trailer is light on details, it reaffirms that Bethesda Game Studios, Kilter Films, and Studio Lambert (The Traitors, Squid Game: The Challenge) are involved with this Fallout project. “The world is ending. The competition is just beginning,” a Pip-Boy display reads. The big news is that the show has an official release date: Jan. 13, 2027. It was previously revealed that the show will run for 10 episodes.
What else do we know about the series?
Here is Amazon’s official description of Fallout Shelter: The Experiment:
Set inside Vault-Tec’s bomb-proof vaults, Fallout Shelter drops a diverse group of contestants into an immersive, high-stakes world inspired by the games’ signature dark humor, retro-futurism, and post-apocalyptic survival storytelling. Across a series of escalating challenges, strategic dilemmas, and moral crossroads, contestants must prove their ingenuity, teamwork, and resilience as they compete for safety, power, and ultimately a huge cash prize.
This new reality show is inspired by the 2015 construction and management sim Fallout Shelter, suggesting its competitions will center on vault dwellers trying to survive a post-apocalyptic nightmare world. It’s probably fair to expect some blue jumpsuits.
A casting call for the show offers additional details.
The dwellers (contestants) live together in a top-secret vault, where they will compete in a series of games that tests the seven core attributes from the Fallout world. Strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck (S.P.E.C.I.A.L). The series will not only test dwellers’ core attributes, but also their loyalty and alliances. It’s a game of power dynamics, popularity and social strategy which will ultimately result in a huge cash prize, but do you have what it takes to be the most S.P.E.C.I.A.L?
While we haven’t seen anything concrete from Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, its premise calls to mind Squid Game: The Challenge. That reality show took Squid Game, a cautionary tale warning against capitalist dehumanization, and turned it into a form of capitalist dehumanization. In the case of Fallout, the series is a dark comedy satire of a world where nationalism and corporate exploitation led to the end of the world; perfect material for a game show!
When is the other Fallout TV show coming back?
For those not interested in reality television, the good news is that Amazon previously announced that more of the scripted Fallout TV series is on the way. The show was renewed for a third season in 2025, shortly before season 2 ran from December 2025 to January 2026. Filming for season 3 began in July 2026, meaning the series will likely run sometime in 2027.
