In the latest news blog for Modern Warfare 4, Activision confirms the game will have a brand-new multiplayer mode similar to Counter-Strike and Valorant. Collateral is a round-based mode which puts a twist on Call of Duty’s iconic Search and Destroy, adding a cash system and high-stakes competitive play.
Collateral is a cash-infused objective mode designed to make every dollar count and every decision matter. Much like Search and Destroy, teams will alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites. All players start with a pistol and earn in-game cash throughout the match to spend on strategic upgrades between rounds.
Eliminating enemies and playing the objective will earn cash to spend on the following upgrades:
- Armor and Perks: Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Fast Hands, Ghost
- Equipment: Flash Grenade, Molotov Cocktail, Frag Grenade, Stim, Smoke Wall, Riot Shield
- Pistols: Silenced Pistol, Revolver, Akimbo Pistols, Power Pistol
- Standard Issue weapons: Shotgun, Light Machine Gun, Marksman Rifle, Silenced SMG, Agile SMG
- Higher-grade guns: Semi Auto Rifle, High Damage Rifle, Burst Rifle, Silenced Rifle, Sniper Rifle
- Team Benefit: UAV streak for the team
Players will lose their loadout if they die, but all earned money is kept between rounds. Additionally, Call of Duty’s respawns, killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts are all disabled in this mode. This adds further incentive for players to play their life carefully and strategize to make the best use of their cash.
This isn’t the first time Call of Duty has tried to put its own spin on a cash-based competitive mode like Counter-Strike, as Treyarch introduced its Heist mode in 2018’s Black Ops 4, which felt like a fresh mode for the franchise. Modern Warfare 4 will also include the new Inflation cash-based multiplayer mode, which is the “high-stakes Team Deathmatch-style mode” featured in the beta last month.
Activision has announced a few major updates for this new year of Call of Duty, including a positive change to how double XP tokens work, an added operator skin toggle feature, and Warzone’s carry forward details.
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.
