Power Rangers: 10 Worst Mentors in the Franchise, Ranked

Power Rangers: 10 Worst Mentors in the Franchise, Ranked

The Power Rangers are some of the most impressive superheroes in media history. Since the early 90’s, they have consistently saved the earth and even the universe. The Power Rangers are led by a sort of mentor figure that assures that they remain on the right path and out of immediate danger. Sadly, not every Power Ranger team receives the same opportunity.

Certain iterations of the Power Rangers are completely devoid of a competent instructional figure. Sometimes, these leaders are all but absent, or make somewhat controversial decisions in the Rangers’ teachings. Most of the time, these instructors mean well, but fail to reach the same heights as previous versions’ beloved mentors.

Master Mao Never Does Anything Meaningful in Jungle Fury

Power Rangers: Jungle Fury

Image via Hasbro

Power Rangers: Jungle Fury sets Master Mao up to be the Ranger’s main mentor. However, the Pai Zhuq master is sent to the spirit realm rather quickly. He might set the Rangers on the path to meet RJ, but he does little else in the entire series. One would think the master of a secret martial arts technique would be somewhat more capable.

10 Best Red Power Rangers, Ranked

The Red Rangers are usually the strongest and most capable members of every Power Rangers team, but that isn’t always the case.

Nonetheless, Mao returns with the rest of the Pai Zhuq masters in the finale to help end Dai Shi, but it feels a little too late for the series. He appears in spirit form several times to guide the Rangers, but his instruction feels disjointed at best. Thankfully, the Jungle Fury Rangers have an actual competent mentor in the form of RJ.

Kendall Morgan Is Much Better Ranger Than Mentor

Power Rangers: Dino Charge

Kendall Morgan is one of the Dino Charge Ranger’s mentors and also the Purple Dino Charge Ranger. She is a fair leader, but performs much better as an addition to the team. In fact, many Power Ranger fans feel that she does nothing other than babysit the rest of the Dino Charge Rangers. Thankfully, she finally gets a chance to shine as part of the team rather than on the sidelines.

Every Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ Color, Main Weapon, Forms, Age, Height & Zords

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are the original and some of the most unique Rangers in the franchise’s entire history.

Since Kendall bonded with one of the Energem, she can technically live forever. Morgan is also highly intelligent, and even creates the morphers used by the Dino Charge Rangers. She might not be the most respectable of leaders, but she is an invaluable addition to the team and a relatively good “guy in the chair”.

Doctor K Creates One of the Power Rangers’ Strongest Adversarries

Power Rangers: RPM

Doctor K Power Rangers (1) Image via Hasbro

Doctor K is an interesting case, because she technically creates the main villain of the Power Rangers RPM series. She serves under Colonel Mason, and ends up creating the Vejinx Virus to escape her terrible childhood. She works hard to make up for this crime, but it’s ultimately too little too late.

The Vejinx Virus is one of the worst villains in Power Rangers history. It is cold, unfeeling, and has one of the highest kil counts in the franchise. The fact that Doctor K had a hand in its creation at all makes her just as guilty as Iron Man was when he created Ultron in Marvel Comics with the help of Hank Pym’s Ant-Man. Ultimately, she didn’t mean to create a world-threatening virus, but her intentions pale in comparison to the result of her actions.

Dane Romero Is Basically Absent From Ninja Steel

Power Rangers: Ninja Steel

Dane Romero Power Rangers (1) Image via Hasbro

Dane Romero suffers from one of the most prevalent problems plaguing Power Rangers mentors in the franchise. His parental struggles sometimes prevent him from letting his son reach his true potential. Moreover, he is somewhat absent from the entire series. He is forced to abandon his sons for the better part of a decade, which obviously affects his decision-making going forward.

Romero is obviously protective of his son, and is a very skilled ninja. Yet, he barely takes the time to transfer his skills. Once he does return, he just assumes that his son can carry the torch from there. Even when he has his doubts, he usually takes them out on the Ninja Steel team rather than realizing he is projecting.

Commander Shaw Somehow Lets Venjix Access Morph-X

Power Rangers: Beast Morphers

What’s worse than creating an ultra-powerful AI bent on world domination? Giving it unfiltered access to the morphin grid, and that’s exactly what Commander Shaw indirectly happens to do. Through her organization, Vejinx returns and gains access to Morph-X which makes them even more powerful than previously.

She is a somewhat competent commander, but her decision-making is clearly also affected by her son. Although it’s literally impossible for a parent not to think of their child, someone should reconsider having mentor parents with Rangers on the team. The result almost never ends well, and even when it does, it is still the source of needless drama.

Andrew Hartfort Lets His Android Son Believe He is a Real Human

Power Rangers: Overdrive

Andrew Hartfort Power Rangers (1) Image via Hasbro

Easily the person most influenced by their children in the series is Andrew Hartfort, but in a rather unique way. He creates a cyborg and lets it fully believe it is a living, breathing human boy. That boy grows up to become the Red Overdrive Ranger and has a realistically large meltdown when he realizes the truth.

Beyond lying to his son his entire life, Hartfort is simply an uneventful leader. He is unable to tell the Overdrive Rangers any information that will truly benefit them and always feels like a needless edition to the iteration. All Hartfort is good for is drama, and that is usually fans’ least favorite part of any respective Power Rangers series.

The Keeper Regularly Disappears When the Dino Charge Rangers Need Them Most

Power Rangers: Dino Charge

The Keeper Power Rangers Image via Hasbro

The Keeper is one of the most absent leaders in the entire series. Not only that, but his design is absolutely atrocious. The Keeper easily feels like something out of The Muppets rather than Power Rangers. Obviously, the franchise is technically centered around children, but the Keeper’s design is just too much in all the wrong ways.

In addition to his poor design, The Keeper really doesn’t do much. He provides the Rangers with the necessary Power Ups, gives some cryptic wisdom, and leaves the rest to them. Thankfully, the Dino Charge Rangers have some form of direction in the form of Kendall Morgan. Yet, she isn’t that great either, as discussed previously.

3

Dimitria Is Extremely Vague and Even Leaves the Rangers at Their Worst

Power Rangers: Turbo

Dimitria Power Rangers Image via Hasbro

Dimitria briefly takes over for Zordon after he must leave the planet to stop an interdimensional threat. When she is first introduced, she speaks only in questions and rarely tells the Rangers exactly what they need to know. She later drops this interesting quirk, but not before leaving the Rangers almost without a mentor. The Turbo Rangers easily get the short end of the stick when it comes to the Zordon-era.

The fact that Dimitria is the first mentor right after Zordon likely has a lot to do with her hate. That said, a lot of her criticism is aptly deserved. She is much less helpful than Zordon and feels more like a giant riddle than anything else. It’s truly amazing the Turbo Rangers managed to get something done.

2

Master Ji Doesn’t Contribute Anything Positive to the Samurai Team

Power Rangers: Samurai

Master Ji Power Rangers (Recropped) Image via Saban

Master Ji simply doesn’t contribute anything positive to the Samurai Power Rangers. He really only has eyes for helping Jaden improve and everyone else feels slightly wasted in comparison. He even briefly takes away Antonio’s morpher that he made himself. Ji is a perfect example of a mentor that is overly strict to the point where it severely hurts the series.

Blue Megaforce Ranger, Blue Power Ranger, and Blue Ranger in Space

Power Rangers: 10 Best Blue Rangers, Ranked

The Blue Rangers are often some of the best supports on any given Power Rangers team, but some are far more popular (and better) than others.

The Samurai Rangers’ mentor also keeps key details secret from the team until it is absolutely necessary. This kind of behavior might have been common in the early series, but it is usually accompanied by good reason. Ultimately, Ji provides nothing to the Samurai iteration other than a negative attitude. That said, he could be considered a fantastic mentor to Jaden Shiba, specifically.

Gosei Is Nothing More Than a Zordon Rip-Off

Power Rangers: Megaforce

Gosei Power Rangers Image via Hasbro

At the end of the day, Gosei is nothing more than a Zordon rip off. He claims to be a student of Earth’s greatest protector, but fails in every area his master succeeded. Gosei is easily the most hated of the mentors, for good reason. He never actually seems to teach his Rangers anything and only throws power-ups at every problem.

Black Power Ranger in Space, MMPR Black Ranger, Black Wild Force Ranger in Power Rangers

Power Rangers: 10 Best Black Rangers, Ranked

The Black Rangers typically serve as the Red Rangers’ second-in-command and are often one of the most popular rangers of any given series.

Gosei has a ton of potential, but all of that is wasted on a less-efficient Zordon clone. He might encourage the Rangers correctly, but that is all he does well. If he didn’t have such a potent connection to the morphin grid, he would be virtually useless otherwise. At least the final battle was cool, and he had a hand in making that and the rest of the series possible. Yet, that is truly the best Gosei has done for the franchise.
