Former Twitch streamer Johnny Somali’s trial in South Korea has ended with a guilty verdict and a sentence of mandatory jail time and detention. The decision came nearly a year and a half after the former Twitch and YouTube streamer was initially indicted back in November 2024.
Ramsey Khalid Ismael, better known by Johnny Somali, got his start livestreaming on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, and quickly gained a following thanks to the inflammatory nature of his streams. His style of content is what’s often referred to as “nuisance streaming,” where streamers act out, harass others, or cause public disturbances, but typically avoid the law by keeping their behavior within legal confines. After his behavior around the world drew attention and ire from officials, including in countries like Japan and Israel, Johnny Somali’s antics in South Korea ultimately got him in significant trouble.

Infamous streamer Zack “Asmongold” Hoyt catches his first Twitch ban in over a year after some particularly incendiary commentary.
Johnny Somali Sentenced to Prison
After numerous delays, Johnny Somali has been found guilty on all counts, which includes two instances of “special act of sexual violence crimes,” two counts of minor crimes, and four instances of interfering with business. While it was speculated that Johnny Somali could spend up to a decade in prison for his acts, ultimately, he was sentenced to six months in labor prison, plus twenty days of detention. Additionally, he has been banned from being employed at any institutions involving children, young people, or anyone with disabilities, and is required to register as a sex offender in both South Korea and the United States, once he eventually returns.
While Somali is only sentenced to six months at this time, there is still a possibility for that to change. Somali’s defense team will have a chance to appeal the ruling within one week, as will the prosecution. However, Somali has already repeatedly attempted to claim that he is sorry for his actions and wants to return home, including at the sentencing, but his pleas have been denied, so the likelihood of his sentence being dismissed or reduced seems minimal. The prosecution, however, may still push for more, as it initially suggested that Johnny Somali spending three years in prison would be an ideal punishment for his actions.
Somali ultimately got in as much trouble as he did for committing a number of crimes under South Korean law. These acts included blasting North Korean propaganda on public transportation, performing lewd acts on the Statue of Peace, which pays tribute to so-called “comfort women” of World War 2, harassed numerous people on the streets and in stores, and ultimately shared deepfakes depicting sexual acts between multiple South Korean streamers and himself. However, it was far from the first time he’d drawn attention from law enforcement, as he had previously faced criminal charges in Japan for similar behavior, and was detained in Israel after sexually harassing a female police officer.

Some have speculated about Somali’s history, and whether he will change his behavior once he’s released from prison. While no one knows if that will be the case but him, the streamer has been banned from numerous platforms, including Kick, Twitch, Rumble, and Parti, and his YouTube account has been deleted, leaving him with little chance of returning to streaming fame.
