In Pokemon FireRed, Scyther can be found in the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City as a wild encounter or bought from the Game Corner for 5,500 Coins. Scyther is a version exclusive to FireRed and is not available in the LeafGreen Version, except through trade. In LeafGreen, Scyther’s counterpart is Pinsir, another Bug/Flying-type Pokemon with similar stats and movepool.
With a catch rate of only 45, Scyther is one of the harder Pokemon to catch in the Safari Zone, especially since you cannot increase the odds in any way by dealing damage or inflicting a status effect on it.
How to Catch Scyther in Pokemon FireRed
Scyther can be found in two locations in Pokemon FireRed.
- Safari Zone
- Celadon Game Corner
Safari Zone
Scyther can be found in Center Area (entrance) of the Safari Zone with a 4% encounter rate, and in Area 1 with a 1% encounter rate. It is an extremely skittish Pokemon and will often flee at the very first sign of movement.
To get Scyther in the Safari Zone, take the following steps:
- Progress through the game until you reach Fuchsia City.
- Pay the 500 Poke Dollar entry fee to enter the Safari Zone.
- Start searching in the very first patch of grass you see until you find a Scyther.
- Use Bait or throw a Safari Ball at it to attempt to capture it.
- If it fails, repeat from step 3.
If you stand still in a patch of grass and change the direction your character faces without moving to a new tile with light button presses, you won’t consume any steps and will still be able to trigger wild encounters with every direction change.
There is no shortcut to increasing the odds of Scyther’s capture in the Safari Zone in Pokemon FireRed. It can be extremely tedious, but you just have to be patient and keep trying until you catch one. To avoid throwing away money, make a hard save before entering the Safari Zone, and if your visit is unfruitful, simply reload the save and try again.
Celadon Game Corner
In the Celadon Game Corner, Scyther can be purchased for 5,500 Coins. If you can gather this amount of coins either by outright purchasing them from the Game Corner Clerk or by gambling, you’ll be able to claim the Scyther from the Prize Counter next door. Here are the steps you need to take for this method:
- Progress through the game until you reach Celadon City.
- Talk to the man in the house south of the Game Corner to get a Coin Case.
- Purchase 5,500 Coins from the Game Corner Clerk or win at the slot machines in the Game Corner until you accumulate the required amount.
- Go to the Coin Prize Exchange Counter, found next door to the Game Corner, and talk to the middle clerk to purchase Scyther for 5,500 Coins.
Make a save before purchasing Scyther so that you can reroll its nature, stats, or even shiny odds if you’re shiny hunting.
How to Evolve Scyther into Scizor in Pokemon FireRed
Scyther evolves into Scizor when it is traded while holding a Metal Coat in Pokemon FireRed. This trade evolution only works after players have obtained the National Pokedex by capturing 60 Pokemon for Professor Oak and becoming the champion.
Metal Coat Location
Metal Coat can be found in two locations in the extended Sevii Islands in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Five Island: In a Poke Ball, right next to the Memorial Pillar landmark that is found east of the Pokemon Center.
- Seven Island: Winning Knockout Mode in the Trainer Tower on Seven Island rewards players with a Metal Coat. This method is repeatable.
In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Magnemite and Magneton do not possess Metal Coat as a Held Item when encountered in the wild.
