One of the best parts of Solo Leveling is its incredible combat system, and the core of it all is the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo. Sung Jinwoo’s powers were first unlocked after his near-death experience in the Double Dungeon. There, he was chosen and granted the powers of a mysterious System.
In the Solo Leveling anime, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Jinwoo’s System, but Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, the upcoming movie, will officially take away all his powers and leave him in a nerfed state. When fighting the Architect, the man behind the System and these powers, Jinwoo’s System is officially set to shut down. Of course, his triumph is still coming at the end, with new power-ups and the full restoration of all his abilities.
Solo Leveling: Beyond the System Will Shut Down Jinwoo’s System Powers
Solo Leveling finished airing its second anime season in March 2025 after an incredibly successful run. Over a year later, we still await the return of the Solo Leveling anime, now confirmed with a new project at Anime Expo 2026, which took place on July 4. Instead of a TV anime, this new project is planned as an anime movie by the same Japanese Studios, Aniplex and A-1 Pictures. A lot remains unknown about this upcoming movie, but it’s clear as day that it’s set to adapt the Ahjin Guild arc and the Return to the Double Dungeon arc. We know that because of its name, Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, and because of its key visual and teaser. Naturally, these two major arcs have major implications for the character of Sung Jinwoo.
Fans of the Solo Leveling manhwa know that in the Return to the Double Dungeon arc, Jinwoo is set to lose some of his powers. That is because he will be locked out of the System, which is the source of his powers that he unlocked during his first journey to the Double Dungeon, where he almost lost his life. This comes as a shocking turn of events for Sung Jinwoo, who, since acquiring the System, has become an unbeatable force, able to take down anyone in his path. Being left without any of these abilities, especially his Shadow Army, puts him in massive trouble, and we will finally witness Solo Leveling’s main character struggle after continuous easy victories.
Why Jinwoo’s System Is Useless Against The Architect In ‘Beyond The System’ Movie
Fans unfamiliar with the Solo Leveling novel and manhwa might be wondering how one can even strip away Sung Jinwoo, one of the strongest Hunters of all time, of his powerful abilities. The answer to that is simple: in the Return to Double Dungeon arc, Sung Jinwoo faces the creator of the System itself, simply known as The Architect.
The Architect intricately crafted the System and even granted Jinwoo its abilities. Because of that, he has complete dominion over this power, and he is able to take it away from Jinwoo, just like he was able to give it to him at the beginning of the story. The upcoming Solo Leveling movie will dive deep into the lore of the series, and we’ll find out that he never gave Jinwoo these powers out of the kindness of his own heart. He simply gave Jinwoo the abilities he has today because he was impressed by his actions during their first encounter in the Double Dungeon.
The Architect believed that Jinwoo would make for a perfect vessel for Shadow Monarch, Ashborn. By leveling up and growing in strength, Jinwoo’s body was simply being primed to sustain the godly presence of Ashborn. Jinwoo’s own personality would be gone in the process of Ashborn’s rebirth. With the nefarious goal of bringing Ashborn back to full power, the Architect invited Jinwoo to the Double Dungeon to trick and defeat him, which is what sets off a major battle between Jinwoo and The Architect. As previously stated, Jinwoo is set to come into this battle greatly nerfed and far from his best state.
Technically, while Jinwoo loses access to most abilities granted to him by the System, he doesn’t go back to being as weak as he was in the first episode of Solo Leveling. He keeps the physical strength he acquired from his level-ups and still possesses some of his personal skills, which include powers like Ruler’s Authority. But, as we’ve seen, this alone isn’t enough to defeat an enemy of the caliber of The Architect. He will need major help to come out alive of this challenge.
How Jinwoo Overcomes The Challenge And Defeats The Architect
With the powers of the System being stripped away from him, Jinwoo is greatly nerfed in battle. Technically, Sung Jinwoo should have died in this confrontation, but special help came through and allowed him to prevail. For one, Jinwoo received some help from Cha Hae-In and Choi Jong-In. These two powerful Hunters followed Jinwoo into the Double Dungeon, and through them engaging in combat with the God Statues, some time was bought for Jinwoo. With this extra time, an intervention from the true Shadow Monarch was made.
Ashborn, the man who acted as the original Shadow Monarch, betrayed the Architect. Ashborn and the Architect were initially working together, but the former changed his mind and decided to allow Jinwoo to continue on his quest. Thus, Jinwoo was granted his strongest power-up yet in the form of the Black Heart. With the Black Heart, Jinwoo’s stats skyrocketed, and he unlocked boundless mana. To overcome the calamity, Jinwoo is then able to override the Architect’s control over the System. By achieving just that, he regained his control over the System, and thus powers like the Shadow Army are made accessible once more.
Jinwoo is then immediately able to summon his powerful Shadows, which include Beru and Igris, to take down the threat of The Architect. Ultimately, the Architect doesn’t stand much of a chance against Jinwoo at full power, but it’s exciting to see Jinwoo struggle against enemies for a change. This battle solidifies The Architect as one of the most dangerous enemies Jinwoo has ever faced. At the very least, this challenge set him on his way to unlock the full powers of the Shadow Monarch and become a godly being with unrivaled strength. Despite the Architect’s defeat, however, the foe still lives, as the one who is defeated is but a copy. His role in the rest of Solo Leveling remains to be seen. We’re eager to see this brilliant manhwa battle being brought to life soon enough in Solo Leveling, and hopefully, it’ll be just as exciting as we expected it to be.
Solo Leveling: Beyond the System will be released in 2027 or 2028, according to the latest reports.
