Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced PS5 Pro Enhancements Revealed

Ubisoft has just announced the full list of PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements coming to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced when it launches on July 9. As a full remake of the original 2013 action-adventure game, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is obviously going to feature an onslaught of improvements for all platforms, but those playing on PS5 Pro will be able to benefit from a few additional upgrades.

  • Extended ray tracing support across all graphics modes
  • 2160p resolution upscaled using enhanced PSSR
  • Strand-based hair for Edward on all graphics modes, and strand-based hair for crowd members in Fidelity mode

In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Ubisoft Technical Director Jussi Markkanen and Technical Architect Nicolas Lopez provide a rundown of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s PlayStation 5 Pro features. One of the core differences between the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro versions of Black Flag Resynced is that the PS5 Pro version will feature ‘Extended’ ray tracing on all three of the game’s possible graphics modes, where the base PS5 version restricts the feature to just Fidelity and Balanced graphics modes. According to Ubisoft, Extended ray tracing refers to the full support of ray tracing throughout the game, including for reflective surfaces.

Another key feature of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s PS5 Pro version is that it’ll make use of the console’s unique PSSR system. Standing for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, PSSR is essentially an AI-powered upscaling technology that will take Black Flag Resynced‘s 2160p resolution and increase the image quality pixel by pixel. Ubisoft claims that PSSR will help to reduce the visual gap between Performance and Fidelity graphics modes.

On top of PSSR functionality and full ray tracing support, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will benefit from Ubisoft’s upgraded strand-based hair system, which renders individual strands of hair for more natural motion during gameplay and cutscenes. On PS5 Pro, Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway will benefit from a strand-based hair system in all graphics modes, while in Fidelity mode, strand-based hair will also be applied to nearby crowd characters.

What some might find a tad disappointing, however, is that the PlayStation 5 Pro won’t deliver 60fps across all of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s graphics modes. Instead, the PS5 Pro will target the same framerates as the base PS5, with Performance mode aiming to achieve 60fps, Fidelity mode aiming for 30fps, and Balanced mode aiming for 40fps.
