Assassin’s Creed Origins Star Says Netflix’s Upcoming Series Has to ‘Listen to the Fans’ and Pay ‘Service and Homage’ for a Successful Adaptation

Abubakar Salim, who played Bayek in the video game Assassin’s Creed Origins, has shared his thoughts on what Netflix’s upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series needs to do to make a successful adaptation, saying that series need to “listen to the fans” and pay “homage” to the franchise.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Salim said, “You just have to think of the community that brought it to life in the first place. You have to give them what they loved at the beginning.”

He explained that while storytelling in television is “very different” from video games, Assassin’s Creed already has a strong foundation and does not require major changes. He added, “It’s had so many years in the game space, you have to listen to the fans there in regards to really paying service and homage to it, because it’s one of those where it’s so easy to try and innovate on it when it doesn’t really need innovation.”

According to Salim, the series “just needs its core, which is the creed itself, the historical elements of it, and the core modern-day stuff as well.” He further said, “I think actually more so with the past stuff, with being the assassin in the past, that’s the historical aspect of it, which is really, really cool. So as long as they can respect that and do it really well and do justice there.”

The upcoming series is based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The adaptation is the first series to be developed under Netflix’s partnership with Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed.

The upcoming series stars Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claes Bang as series regulars. Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, and Corrado Invernizzi have also joined the cast in recurring roles. Roberto Patino and David Wiener serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

The exact details of the upcoming series remain under wraps. Its official logline reads, “Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

There is currently no official release date for Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series. The show is currently in production in Rome, Italy.
