Battlefield 6 made a sudden change players loved, but devs quickly backtracked because it was ‘an error’

Battlefield 6 players went on a bit of an emotional roller coaster today after the game’s 1.3.3 update went live this morning.

After the update became available on June 30, an in-game message popped up for players explaining that XP Boosts would now begin to only “count down based on in-game time instead of real time” as they have been. It was a huge hit with players…until it wasn’t.

About six hours later, the official @BattlefieldComm account posted that the change was actually made in error somehow. And it’s going about as poorly as you’d imagine.

“Earlier today, an in-game message about XP Boosters was sent in error,” the post said. “That message has now been removed, and there are no changes to how XP Boosters currently work. We appreciate all your feedback on this topic and will continue to share it with the team.”

It’s apparent the change has likely been in the works but was somehow pushed live early, but instead of just letting it fly, Battlefield devs have backed off on the change and players are pretty annoyed. I can’t say I blame them.

“You can’t be serious?” one player complained. “Everyone has been asking for that change to be made. Then you immediately remove it after we all start to rejoice? ‘We’re listening to your feedback’ NO YOU ARE NOT LMAO.”

In-game XP Boosters typically count real world time (Call of Duty games do it too), and it’s a pain since you have to carefully choose when to use them to maximize the time spent. If it were to only count in-game time, there’d be no issue. It’s something all players want, but XP Boosts are also for sale on the in-game shop, so it’s easy to see how this is a controversial topic.

“Holy fuck stop being so endlessly greedy,” another player said. “How can an in-game message pop up that’s false? Who made it? Why on earth would this decision be backtracked… for the pennies you make from it? And I gave no care in the world about XP boosters before this. Capitalism Manifest.”

It’s hard to fault players here. There were some really solid vibes floating around the game this morning after the message popped up, and to see it taken away so swiftly must feel really discouraging.
