In Mortal Shell 2, one of the biggest decisions a player has to make is choosing their main Shell, since this choice has a huge impact on a playthrough. Each Shell is unique in its own way, offering players a different way to tackle the challenges that come their way.
While there are no “bad” Shells per se, especially with upgrades, some are definitely better than others during the early hours of a playthrough. This guide will cover the best Shells you can get within a few hours of starting a New Game and where to find them. Here’s the breakdown.
Tiel
The very first Shell you should definitely go after in Mortal Shell 2 is Tiel, a sneaky thief built around dealing critical attack damage while remaining invisible. Tiel has the innate ability to instantly go invisible every time he “perfect dodges” an attack, which comes in very handy in one-on-one fights against bosses and elite enemies. In addition, Tiel can also go invisible on command and deal a devastating blow to enemies from the shadows, though he is very slow when in this state.
The best part is that no enemy in the game has any answer to Tiel’s invisibility, making him the most beginner-friendly Shell in the game. When fully upgraded, Tiel can remain in the shadows for much longer, which makes him quite overpowered. However, even without any investment, Tiel is no slouch, making it easy to recommend him as the very first Shell you should go for in a fresh run of Mortal Shell 2.
How to Unlock Tiel
Tiel can be found in an open grave in a clearing southeast of the Widow’s Overlook beacon, just south of Mushroom Village.
Proxima
Where Tiel is a glass cannon, stealthy assassin-type character, Proxima is an in-your-face tank who can take as much of a beating as she can dish out. She has more health and more resistance compared to Tiel and some other Shells, making her ideal for players who prefer a berserker style of gameplay.
Her Shell passive is Grafted Armor, providing her with a base 15% chance to mitigate melee or ranged hits. Any mitigated attacks have their damage reduced by 50%. Her active ability is called Biosampler. When used, this ability fires a hook that can either pull small to medium enemies to Proxima or pull Proxima to larger enemies, before following up with a powerful Lightning attack.
The best part about Proxima, however, is neither her tankiness nor her abilities. Instead, it is actually her ability to harvest biosamples from enemies when her abilities are upgraded. While this ability seems somewhat useless, it is actually one of the best in the game. Why? Because these biosamples can be sold to Merrick for gold, making Proxima the only Shell in the game that can actively farm gold.
How to Unlock Proxima
Proxima can be found in the Shattered Beacon dungeon, northeast of the Blackridge Pass beacon, right next to the Crumbling Tunnel dungeon. You do not need to fight anything to unlock Proxima; she’s lying on top of a coffin on the very first level, without any protection.
Eredrim
Eredrim is one of the strongest boss-killer Shells you can find in Mortal Shell 2, and he is obtainable very early on in a playthrough if you know where to look. Eredrim gets two active abilities: the Shoulder Bash, which allows him to deal a massive amount of Break damage to a single target, and a Bell, which allows him to inflict a small amount of Break damage to all enemies around him. In addition, he also gets the passive Executioner, which allows him to execute low-health enemies.
What makes Eredrim an incredible option against bosses is his Shoulder Bash ability. When upgraded, this ability can fully break any boss in two tries, making it possible to Riposte bosses over and over again if you’re able to maintain the Resolve needed to perform it.
How to Unlock Eredrim
Eredrim can be found in the Citadel of Penance, in the boss arena of “The Warden.” This area is accessible in one of two ways: you can either get the Citadel Gate Lever by defeating the Bloodcursed Lithopod and entering the Citadel that way, or you can interact with the coin pouch on the bridge northeast of the One Legged Wolf beacon to directly enter the Citadel of Penance prison area.
Regardless of which method you use, explore the Citadel of Penance until you reach the large circular arena at the very top. When you step on it, the Warden will appear, and the boss fight will begin. After you defeat him, interact with the knight’s corpse on the ground to unlock Eredrim.
