Black Clover: 6 Strongest Magic Knight Squad Captains, Officially Ranked

In the world of Black Clover, the Clover Kingdom is led and protected by the one who holds the title of Wizard King. The Wizard King also leads the Magic Knight Squads. Nine of these squads exist inside the Clover Kingdom, and at their helm, each has a Captain.

All Magic Knight Squad Captains are powerful, as they have proven themselves worthy to lead right under the Wizard King. However, it has become undeniably clear through the run of Black Clover that not all Magic Knight Squad Captains are equal. While all of them are strong, some have powers that could even rival those of the Wizard King and other powerful beings of the Black Clover series.

Nacht

• Magic Attribute: Shadow Magic
• Captain of: Black Bull Magic Knight Squad

For the majority of the run of Black Clover, Yami was the Captain of the Black Bulls. However, in Black Clover Chapter 392, this officially changed. Yami retired from his position and headed to Hino Country to marry Charlotte. This left his position as the Captain of the Black Bulls open. It was revealed in the very same chapter that the person who had taken over this position was the previous Vice Captain of the Black Bulls, now Captain Nacht Faust.

Nacht Faust leads the Black Bulls with his Vice Captain, Vanessa, and his powers definitely stand out among the Magic Knight Squad Captains. While he isn’t as strong as Yami, his Shadow Magic makes him a formidable foe to fight. He is able to slip through Shadows and is a master at stealth and close-range combat. Not only that, but Nacht Faust possesses contracts with three mid-level Devils, allowing for some power boosts and devil unions.

Fuegoleon

• Magic Attribute: Fire Magic
• Captain of: Crimson Lion Magic Knight Squad

Fuegoleon is the primary Captain of the Crimson Lion Squad. Just like the other members of his family, he has fire attribute magic under his control. On top of that, what makes Fuegoleon stand out from some other Magic Knight Squad Captains is his connection to the Fire Spirit. Just like Yuno’s Sylph and Noelle’s Leviathan, Fuegoleon possesses the Fire Spirit, Salamander.

Previously the Fire Spirit for Fana, Salamander and Fuegoleon have forged a new bond. Through his connection with Salamander, his fire powers have been enhanced, making him one of the most competent and strongest Magic Knight Captains around. Merged with the Fire Spirit, he can even melt steel and boil water with ease.

Dorothy

• Magic Attribute: Dream Magic
• Retired Captain of: Coral Peacock Magic Knight Squad

Dorothy is one of the most dangerous Magic Knight Captains when she’s awake. She was the Captain of the Coral Peacock, but she has now retired and become the new Witch Queen of Black Clover.

For a while, she was even thought of by the fandom as the very strongest, and that is down to how powerful her magic powers are. Dorothy possesses Dream Magic. Using this magic, she can create a side dimension to trap her enemies in. In the Dream World, Dorothy possesses complete reality-warping powers. Defeating Dorothy is no easy task. In Black Clover, she even fights Yami and finishes the fight in a draw. The fact that she has become the new Witch Queen by itself is a testament to her strength.

Mereoleona

• Magic Attribute: Fire Magic
• Temporary Captain of: Crimson Lion Magic Knight Squad

Technically, Mereoleona was only a temporary Clover Kingdom Magic Knight Squad Captain. She took over the role after her brother Fuegoleon was gravely injured. Thus, for a time, she was the captain of the Crimson Lions. While she isn’t the permanent Captain, she is undoubtedly the strongest person who has ever stood at their helm. Mereoleona’s strength is unrivaled by most mages. Her fiery personality and thirst for battle put her in the midst of many exciting fights.

Mereoleona has proven her might at multiple points in the story, and in the Black Clover movie, The Sword of the Wizard King, she cemented herself as a Wizard King-level fighter, undoubtedly worthy of being called one of the greatest Squad Captains of all time. She was able to defeat the likes of Prince Funnybunny, high-ranking Devils, as well as Paladin Acier. Her list of achievements precedes her.

2

Yami

• Magic Attribute: Dark Magic
• Retired Captain of: Black Bull Magic Knight Squad

Yami is one of the very strongest Magic Knight Squad Captains and one of the strongest characters of all time in Black Clover. He was a highlight of the series for years, as he found himself at the helm of the Black Bulls. At the beginning, the Black Bulls didn’t have the best reputation around, which led to many looking down on Yami. That said, he proved himself more than competent throughout the run of Black Clover.

Yami possesses the rare magical attribute of Dark Magic. By wielding Dark Magic in combination with his Hino Country swordsmanship skills, he is an unstoppable force. Through his guidance and strength, the Black Bulls became, for a time, the greatest Magic Knight Squad. Yami officially retired from his position in Black Clover chapter 392, but his impact is still felt even after.

1

Yuno

• Magic Attribute: Star Magic, Wind Magic
• Captain of: Golden Dawn Magic Knight Squad

For the vast majority of the Black Clover story, Yami, the Captain of the Black Bulls, undoubtedly stood as the very strongest Magic Knight Squad Captain. Now, that has changed. In the last chapter of Black Clover, the new strongest Captain has risen. In Black Clover chapter 391, Asta and Yuno’s battle for the title of Wizard King officially concluded. Asta emerged victorious and became the 29th Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, while Yuno lost and had to cut his losses.

Yuno did not become the new Wizard King; instead, he went on to earn his own prestigious title as he succeeded William and became the new captain of Clover Kingdom’s most distinguished squad — the Golden Dawn. He acquired this new title in Black Clover Chapter 392. At the end of the story, Yuno stands as the very strongest Squad Captain. He is a fighter on the same level as the current Wizard King and one who even undertook the massive challenge of defeating Lucius Zogratis during Judgment Day. Yuno then grows even stronger as he trains for 2 years during the timeskip of Black Clover. His overall level of power surpasses even that of Yami, and he is easily the strongest Squad Captain that we have seen in the entirety of Black Clover, especially thanks to his Star Magic.
