Unity have announced Unity 7, the latest incarnation of their game creation platform. In a pleasant shock for people who’ve been keeping up with Unity’s doings these past couple of years, it doesn’t appear to ruin anything. Aside from more routine promises of “speedier workflows” and tastier graffix, the company are promising a more “open” approach whereby collaborators using third-party tools can contribute more easily to Unity projects, without using the full Unity editor. This being the year 2026, there are of course some new features for genAI fans, though Unity appear interestingly guarded on this front, stressing that these can be ignored.
Still, the real headline ‘innovation’ appears to be that most boring and blessed of things: straightforward compatibility with videogame projects using the previous incarnation of Unity’s gadgetry. “All projects, skills, and code will carry forward smoothly into the next generation,” the company promised in an announcement from Unite Seoul, via Automatin. Picture Moses coming down the mountain with a stone tablet that reads “fear not, impoverished goblin coders who are four years into their projects – you won’t have to f**king rebuild everything”.
If you haven’t been keeping up with Unity, they put themselves in the doghouse a couple years ago by proposing to charge game developers a fee everytime somebody installs a Unity game. Game developers found the concept displeasing. Unity rowed back the plans a year later, having comprehensively nuked their reputation for being a friend of smaller outfits. All this took place against a backdrop of mass layoffs, as Unity joined the ranks of companies looking to “right the ship” following the Covid lockdown boom.
As reported by Game Developer, Unity 7 is a “direct continuation” of Unity 6. It’s due to enter early beta testing in December 2026, with the final release taking place sometime in early 2027.
It will adopt CoreCLR as its default scripting backend, which will apparently make for faster Play Mode startup times (Play Mode is a preview feature that lets devs see how a WIP game would appear to a regular player) and shader compilation. It will add a new global illumination system, Surface Cache GI, which is designed for more believable lighting in worlds that move around a lot. As ever, I apologise to any more knowledgeable readers for my blundering layperson summaries.
There’s a new command line interface and public application programming interface which apparently let external developers “validate assets, push builds, and collaborate from their own tools”. As explained by senior vice president of product Matt Smith, an artist working in Blender could be sent a “deep link” that carries “the full project, scene, asset, and revision context” needed to make a fix, without being given proper editor access. The artist could then make that fix in a browser dashboard, and check it against in-game lighting an animation using a scene preview feature, before handing it off to project engineers to be checked over and added to a build of the game.
Unity 7 also packs a “model context protocol” that lets generative AI coding agents connect directly to the engine. This is as opposed to using a genAI such as Claude to write some code and then pasting it into the editor. Epic are touting similar integrations with Unreal Engine 6, but Unity aren’t pushing the idea as hard as Epic. Indeed, as Game Developer note, the language around MCP is startlingly reserved, when compared to executive rhetoric from a few months before. “It’s true that game creation is evolving—teams of creators and coding agents are increasingly working side by side, and Unity 7 is genuinely built for that world,” Smith told Game Developer. “But built for that world doesn’t mean built to require it.” The engine also includes Vector, a set of tools for commerce and monetisation, including the ability to create a “no-code webshop”.
I am not a Sorcerer of Computation, and cannot tell you with total confidence whether all this bodes well or ill, but a few game developers I respect have given the Unity 7 announcement a cautious thumbs-up. Here is Caves of Qud’s Brian Bucklew, for example: “a bunch of ai shit nobody will use and not breaking the core is good i think actually”. The developer reaction so far is lightyears apart from the vitriol directed at Unreal Engine 6, whose brighter ideas include retiring the cherished Blueprints visual scripting language in favour of something called Verse, which is the subject of pretty extensive criticism.
