Destiny 2 players are spending big on the game in light of this week’s announcement that old content taken out of the game will be put back in
News of Bungie’s reversal earlier this week has been met with excitement, relief, and skepticism all the same. But for now, it appears that players are stocking up on past expansions and even maybe the Silver in-game currency ahead of the eventual unvaulting.
On Steam’s US best-seller list, Destiny 2 has jumped 47 spots (and as high as 50 spots, spotted on Reddit), meaning that money is being made and players are excited at the prospect of being able to play content they may have missed out on. It’s also in 49th place on the Global sellers list, marking its debut.
Bungie’s controversial decision to “vault” the game’s old content like Destinations, Raids, Strikes, and story missions has been one of the biggest bugaboos in the franchise’s history, regardless of how it was explained to be necessary to keep the game a manageable size. It scared a lot of players away, and pissed off just as many, if not more. The studio says it needs to earn player trust again, and that unvaulting old playable content is a first step in that journey.
For now, though, it’s still a bit unclear what all will be coming back to the game. Bungie said that it’s started the process of bringing back “vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids,” but there are a lot of specifics unknown at this point in time. A lot of the game has changed since the original expansions like Forsaken, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, etc., and it’s a question mark what will translate to this newest version of the game.
The hope is that everything taken away will return, including campaign missions, Crucible and Gambit maps, and explorable Destinations. But what about weapons (will they use the new Tiers system?), or location-specific modes, or classic Strikes?
Players are happy with the news now, for the time being. But I’m hoping we get some further clarification on what to expect (and when) in the future.
