Gears of War: E-Day’s servers have been struggling because they’ve been suffering distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, apparently – so someone, or some people, have been deliberately trying to overload them.
The Gears of War community X account revealed this after a string of updates related to login issues. The account said: “Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.

“Our teams are continuing to monitor and mitigate this activity. We’ll provide updates if there are any significant changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
The official Xbox account also tweeted: “Service for Gears of War: E-Day is back to normal. Thanks for your patience while we worked to resolve the issue.” And it shared a link to track support updates related to this case.
The login issues, which caused extended wait times and resulted in server outages – rendering the game unplayable even if you wanted to play the campaign – were first mentioned yesterday. A handful of hours later, these had apparently been resolved, though many comments to the contrary suggested issues remained.
It’s a bumpy start for what has otherwise been a notable new entry in the Gears series, with Dom awarding Gears of War: E-day four stars in Eurogamer’s review – it’s a game of contrasts, Dom said. “Though there’s still plenty of waist-high cover, ebb-and-flow firefighting, and braindead machismo, Gears E-Day proves that looking back can, indeed, help you look forward, too,” Dom wrote.
This isn’t the first time this year we’ve seen a game’s online portion impacted by DDoS attacks: in January, Arc Raiders and The Finals were hit by “coordinated” DDoS attacks. Around the same time, Final Fantasy 14 was seemingly targeted by similar attacks. It’s an on-going issue in games with no simple or easy resolution.
