Ghost in the Shell Confirms New Anime Production With Science SARU Returning

A new Ghost in the Shell anime production is underway, with Science SARU returning to handle animation, according to an announcement from the franchise’s official X account. The announcement does not reveal what the new anime will be about, nor does it provide a release window or further production details.

Science SARU previously animated the 2026 television series The Ghost in the Shell, which aired in Japan from July to September. The newly announced production brings the studio back to a franchise that has received several different anime adaptations over the decades.

The original Ghost in the Shell manga was created by Masamune Shirow and began publication in 1989. It is set in a technologically advanced future where cyberbrains, networked systems, and cybernetic bodies have become part of everyday life. The story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg who leads Public Security Section 9, a unit tasked with investigating cybercrime and threats to national security.

The franchise has been adapted into theatrical films, television series, original video animations, and video games. Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 animated film became one of its best-known adaptations, while Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex explored the characters and setting through a separate television storyline.

Science SARU’s 2026 series was a new television adaptation of Shirow’s original manga, directed by Mokochan and written by EnJoe Toh. Shuhei Handa handled character designs and served as executive animation director. The studio is also known for anime including DAN DA DAN and The Colors Within.

The latest announcement does not establish whether the new production will continue the 2026 series, revisit an existing storyline, or introduce another interpretation of the source material.
