How to Get the Golden Scale in Zelda Ocarina of Time

If you’ve come across Lake Hylia, then you might have seen the fishing hut already! Or, you might have crossed paths with the man in the laboratory who tells you about a reward if you manage to dive to the bottom of his pool. Regardless of the task, you’re not getting what you’re after unless you’re Adult Link, and unless you have the Golden Scale! We’ll explain everything you need to know about fishing in the Ocarina of Time remake so you can get some great rewards.

How to Find the Fishing Hut in Ocarina of Time (Remake)

To begin, make sure you’re playing as Adult Link. You’ll also need the Scarecrow Song, which we have a guide above for. When you’re Adult Link, head to Lake Hylia and play the Scarecrow Song at the entrance to the fishing hut, as you will need to summon Pierre so you can Hookshot him to grapple up.

To fish, stand as close to the center of the pond as possible, then press ZR to cast your line. To attract fish to your line, slowly tap Down on the Left Stick. Once they bite, press ZR again to hook them. You now need to tire out the fish, or it will break the line.

To tire out fish and reel them in, move the Left Stick in the same direction the fish is swimming. For instance, if the fish is swimming left, then point the Left Stick left. You won’t have to worry about omnidirectional inputs; just left or right is fine.

The fish will eventually get tired, allowing you to hold ZR to reel it in. Remember, the fish will fight back, so keep tiring it out with the Left Stick, then reel it in with ZR. Once it’s close enough, Link can grab the fish, and the Fishing-Pond Man will assess its size.

Fishing-Pond Man will award you the Golden Scale if you catch a fish that’s 13+ Pounds. This is easier than you’d think, as you’ll spot some pretty big fish swimming toward the center of the pond. To catch them, repeat the instructions above and keep an eye out for bigger fish.

If you come here as Child Link, you can catch a 10+ Pounds fish to get a Piece of Heart!

When you’ve caught a big fish, keep it and return to Fishing-Pond Man. You can tell him, “I’m done,” and he will weigh the fish you caught. If he’s impressed by its size, he will give you the Golden Scale. The Golden Scale allows you to dive 9 meters deep!

How to Dive to the Bottom of the Lakeside Laboratory

Opposite the fishing hut is the Lakeside Laboratory, and with the Golden Scale, you will finally be able to swim to the bottom! Just jump in the water and dive in, and thanks to the Golden Scale, you’ll touch the bottom. When you leave the water, the scientist will award you a Piece of Heart.
