Deltarune’s Chapter 5 is full of optional encounters that reward curious players, like the Hopschef Bread Challenge. This entertaining challenge is hidden in the Garden and features Hopschef tuning a giant loaf of sourdough into a fast-paced platforming minigame that rewards you with Flowery Dollars. It’s easy to miss this minigame, but completing the challenge rewards an exclusive healing item and unlocks one of the best repeatable money farming activities in chapter 5 of Deltarune.
Where to Find Hopschef in Deltarune
Hopschef is one of Chapter 5’s most memorable NPCs. He can be found in the Garden, just to the right of the first room that introduces the giant scissors obstacle. The energetic chef is impossible to miss, constantly performing jumping jacks beside a huge loaf of sourdough bread.
If the party brings the watering can to this room and waters the bread, a tiny flower blooms on top of it. It is only a small detail, but it perfectly matches the whimsical atmosphere of the Flower Kingdom.
The bread challenge does not unlock immediately. Players have to continue progressing until they get the Petal Feather. Once platforming mode becomes available in this area, Kris can attack the giant loaf, triggering the Bread Challenge.
Even after reaching the Top of Castle, the room remains accessible by backtracking through the Ideal Diner or by using the shortcut door. As such, it’s easy to return whenever you want to improve your time.
How to Play the Hopschef Bread Minigame
The Bread Challenge is a timed platforming minigame where the objective is to destroy ten floating pieces of dough before time expires. As soon as Kris enters the challenge room after striking the blue bounce flower near Hopschef, the timer begins counting down. You will have twenty seconds to clear every dough target.
Opening Kris’s ACT menu slows down the timer without stopping it completely. This gets you a little extra time to think about your next move if things start getting messy.
Movement here depends on the room’s bounce flowers. Yellow flowers launch Kris upward while the blue flowers send them in different directions depending on the angle of attack and Kris’s position. Learning how these launches work can help you finish the challenge quickly.
The room may seem chaotic during the first attempt, but after a few runs, the layout becomes much easier to memorize.
Susie’s Doughbuster S Action can hit dough through walls, letting players destroy awkward targets without taking the longer route. The ability has a 4-second cooldown, so using it at the right moment can save valuable seconds instead of wasting it early.
If the timer expires before every dough target is destroyed, the bread is humorously brought “BROT back to life,” and players can immediately try again with no penalty.
All Bread Challenge Rewards
The first time you successfully complete Hopschef’s bread challenge, you win the most valuable reward. Ralsei heals the destroyed loaf into a TreeCake. Once the nearby platswap statue has been activated, players can collect the TreeCake.
Like the SpinCake from earlier chapters, only one TreeCake can be carried at a time. However, another one can always be earned later by repeating the challenge after using the current cake.
Remember, TreeCake can only be carried one at a time. Use your current TreeCake before returning to Hopschef if you want another.
All subsequent clears reward Flowery Dollars. The amount earned depends entirely on how quickly the challenge is finished.
- Completing the challenge within fifteen seconds awards ten Flowery Dollars.
- Finishing within twelve seconds increases the reward to twenty Flowery Dollars.
- Clearing everything in eight seconds or less grants forty Flowery Dollars.
- The best possible performance is finishing in under five seconds. This still awards forty Flowery Dollars, but every reward is given as a valuable five F Dollar coin instead. Hopschef also has exclusive dialogue that congratulates players for reaching this impressive time.
If your goal is farming Flowery Dollars, aim for consistent runs under eight seconds instead of chasing the under-five-second record immediately. This is a much more reliable source of income.
