Invincible Season 3 Includes a Walking Dead Easter Egg of Rick Grimes’ Most Violent Scene

Invincible Season 3 Includes a Walking Dead Easter Egg of Rick Grimes’ Most Violent Scene

Summary

  • Invincible Season 3 features many references to The Walking Dead through characters and Easter eggs.
  • Mark Grayson’s violent act in the finale pays homage to Rick Grimes’ brutal moment in TWD.
  • The upcoming Season 4 of Invincible could provide even more Easter eggs for fans to discover.

Invincible Season 3 premiered on Prime Video on February 6, 2025, and throughout its previous seasons, fans have seen plenty of Walking Dead references scattered in its episodes. It’s little wonder why the animated series has such a love for throwing in Easter eggs from the beloved post-apocalyptic series, as Invincible‘s co-creator is the very same creator of The Walking Dead comics. Not only this, but quite a few actors from the AMC show, which ran from 2010 to 2022, also feature in Kirkman’s animated superhero adventure.

Even in The Walking Dead‘s episodes, a number of Invincible references can also be found, like Carl (Chandler Riggs) reading issues of the comic, “Invincible”- themed t-shirts, as well as Sam playing with toys that showcase characters like Allen the Alien and Omni-Man can be seen. Maybe one of the biggest Easter eggs in the animated series so far has been Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) from TWD making his way over to play Conquest in season 3, in which he confronts Mark Grayson in an ironic scene that sees Invincible‘s protagonist, voiced by Steven Yeun, finally get his chance at revenge for his character Glenn’s death in The Walking Dead. In season 3’s bloody and violent finale between the pair, another The Walking Dead reference can be found and this time, it’s a nod to Rick Grimes’ most savage moment.

Invincible Season 3’s Bloody Battle Sees Mark Pay Homage to Rick Grimes’ Violent Act

Mark crying in Invincible Season 3

In Invincible Season 3’s savage final battle between Mark and Conquest, the show’s protagonist had been getting trashed by the Viltrumite veteran warrior, but in a bid to get the upper hand and finally overpower the bloody battle, Mark can be seen sinking his teeth into Conquest’s shoulder and in turn, breaking free from the villain’s powerful grip. This particular gruesome act by Mark is a subtle nod to one of Rick Grimes’ most brutal scenes in The Walking Dead, where he jumps into action to protect his son Carl by biting into Joe’s neck, ripping out his throat, and spitting a mouthful of splurting blood all over the ground.

Rick’s unbelievably brutal yet understandably violent act meant that Carl and Michonne managed to get away safely from the sadistic and cruel Claimers and live to fight another day. Rick’s iconic and bloody moment has gone down in The Walking Dead‘s history books as one of the most ruthless and shocking scenes in the series, although Glenn’s death at the hands of Negan does take some beating. It appears that Mark in Invincible has also adopted the same mindset and outlook as Rick when it comes to bringing some enemies to their knees and will do what it takes to keep the ones he loves under his protection.

Invincible season 3 consists of eight episodes, with its last final episode released on March 13, 2025. However, Invincible was officially renewed for Season 4, so fans will have to keep an eye out for even more The Walking Dead Easter eggs when it returns.
