Jessica Chastain's new horror movie just keeps getting scarier

Move aside, Michael Myers. Take a hike, Jason Voorhees. Get a real job, Art the Clown. Horror has a new name in 2026, and it’s… Mommy.

Other Mommy, to be precise, which is also the title of Universal’s upcoming horror movie starring Jessica Chastain as both the seemingly normal, loving mother Ursula and her evil doppelgänger who likes to hide under tables and contort her limbs in directions they shouldn’t be able to bend.

The bone-chilling trailer for Other Mommy has already built anticipation to astronomical levels for the new horror movie from director Rob Savage (The Boogeyman, Host). But ahead of the film’s release on Oct. 9, Universal shared an exclusive new look at the movie with Polygon as part of our 2026 Fall Preview.

The image shows Chastain looking angry, confident, and a little bit frazzled. It’s unclear if we’re seeing Ursula or Other Mommy here — it could honestly go either way. Regardless, it’s an intriguing view into what might just be the biggest horror movie of this year’s spooky season.

What’s the plot of Other Mommy?

From producer James Wan, one of the most influential architects of modern horror, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the studio behind Backrooms and Obsession, comes a terrifying trip from breakout genre director Rob Savage, into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.

Who is in the cast of Other Mommy?

Jessica Chastain plays the two lead roles. Jay Duplass plays her husband, Daddo. Arabella Olivia Clark plays their child, Bela. The cast also includes Dichen Lachman (Severance), Arian Moayed (Succession, Wonder Man), and legendary scream queen Karen Allen.
