Marvel Snap’s oppressive amount of cards to collect got much bigger today, but they introduce a new mechanic that feels like a lot to deal with on day one.
Fractured Frontier is the name of the season, themed around a different Wild West-style universe and a season pass card where Thanos is a gunslinger who loads Infinity Shots into his revolver instead of Infinity Stones on his Gauntlet. That alone is pretty cool, and also kind of inevitable as the game adds more and more “variant” characters of existing ones already in the game out of necessity.
But with the card comes Quickdraw, a new mechanic that’s simple in concept and fun in execution. With Quickdraw, “These effects are active the first turn you draw them. (Next turn if cards are already revealing).” It adds a new wrinkle where you need to time your draws with playing the card for maximum effectiveness.
For example, Thanos: Fractured Frontier will load his Infinity Shots a second time, and Super Premium Pass card Jane Foster: Fractured Frontier will trigger her On Reveal effect again if played the same turn she’s drawn. This means your decks must be built around drawing the card properly and playing it that same turn, so it creates for some fun builds.
Cards like Quicksilver, Domino, Adam Warlock, and Crystal immediately come to mind considering they all deal with card draws. But I’d be lying if I said these effects didn’t feel a bit overwhelming on day one with the all-new named mechanic.
Thanos alone has six Infinity Shots that all have their own unique effect to keep track of, and you can only load more shots if you trigger the Quickdraw effect on cards that start in your hand. It’s a lot to manage, but playing a Thanos on the turn he’s drawn when he’s got a bunch of shots already loaded creates for some truly wild plays.
I mean, just look at this:
- SPACE SHOT: +1 Power and Moveable next turn.
- MIND SHOT: Draw 1 card.
- REALITY SHOT: Make a copy of your other lowest Cost card here.
- POWER SHOT: +3 Power.
- TIME SHOT: Reduce the cost of your cards in hand by 1.
- SOUL SHOT: Destroy the weakest enemy card here.
Yeah, it’s really strong if you can pull it off, but I need more practice (or brain capacity) to figure it out. You can learn more about Quickdraw and Fractured Frontier on the Marvel Snap website.
