Mass Effect 5 Director Comments on Game’s Status

This article was updated by Andrea Trama on May 2, 2026, with a timeline of the updates for Mass Effect 5 since its announcement. It was first published on April 23.

Mass Effect fans waiting for the fifth mainline chapter in the series have been met with a lot of silence recently, but game director Michael Gamble has finally offered a little insight into the project’s progress. The first Mass Effect game was one of the most influential RPGs of the 2000s, and many gamers have been eager to see what the next chapter has in store.

It’s no secret that the wait for a new Mass Effect game has been a long one. Developer BioWare first announced the project all the way back in 2020 at that year’s Game Awards, and there haven’t been many major updates ever since. Of course, there have been hints and very small teasers via the community’s annual N7 Day, but fans mostly just have short trailers and concept art to work off. However, Michael Gamble has finally spoken up about how development is coming along.

The comment comes from a response Gamble made on Twitter. An eager Mass Effect fan tweeted at Gamble, mentioning that there hasn’t really been a solid update since the N7 Day Krogan teaser back in November. Gamble replied that the main reason he hasn’t been able to update fans on Mass Effect 5‘s development is because he’s simply too busy working on it. According to Gamble, there hasn’t been enough free time to tease the project.

This is a timeline of all the updates for Mass Effect 5 so far:

  • December 2020 – Official announcement at TGA with a teaser
  • November 2021 – First concept art for N7 Day
  • November 2022 – ME5 is confirmed to be in pre-production on N7 Day
  • November 2023 – Small teasers on N7 Day
  • June 2024 – ME5 is confirmed as a single-player game
  • January 2025 – EA announces BioWare is undergoing a restructuring after Dragon Age: The Veilguard
  • November 2025 – Team is confirmed to be fully working on ME5 for N7 Day, and a small Krogan-themed teaser is shown
  • January 2026 – A job listing for Production Director appears, suggesting expansion of the team or scope of the game
  • April 2026 – Michael Gamble, ME5 Director, says the team is “just busy workin”

This could just be Gamble’s clever way at avoiding answering questions about Mass Effect 5, but it’s at least promising that the game is still being worked on. Theories about the Mass Effect 5 release date have continued to pop up over the years. Some are hoping for a surprise 2026 launch or 2027 window, while others don’t expect the game to be ready until closer to 2030. In the six years since the game’s original reveal, a combination of fan theories, teasers, and even a Mass Effect TV show announcement have continued to hype up the community.

The bulk of the game remains a huge mystery, though. Last year at least confirmed some Mass Effect 5 features, like romance, will return. Romance options coming back isn’t really that surprising, though. It’s an essential part of the series. Many of the replies to Gamble’s comment have been encouraging, with a lot of fans expressing their hope that such a long development cycle simply means that the game will be the most detailed and complex yet.

There’s no way to know for sure what the rest of the year has in store when it comes to Mass Effect 5 news. By the time the game comes out, it could already have some solid competition. First impressions of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn beta have been saying it has the potential to go head-to-head with the Mass Effect series. This year hopefully brings forth more updates than the usual N7 teasers. Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards would be perfect places to showcase a bigger trailer and launch window, but Gamble’s words sound like the team may be too busy to make any major announcements any time soon.
