Mass Effect-like RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn ropes in David Gaider, the original lead writer of Bioware’s Dragon Age series

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn looks like it’s carrying the best bits of Mass Effect forward, and in an encouraging move, the developers have been collaborating with David Gaider.

Of course, David Gaider is best known as the lead writer on Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition – he’s also often credited as the architect of its dark fantasy world Thedas. Gaider’s post-BioWare career saw him open his own game development house Summerfall Studios, which most recently released an ambitious roleplaying musical called Stray Gods.

But he’s now lending a hand to a game that’s not too dissimilar to BioWare’s other hugely famous roleplaying series, while still working on his own games at Summerfall.

“Alongside my work at Summerfall, I’ve also been collaborating with the Owlcat Games team on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, focusing on certain aspects of the game’s narrative. The Expanse has long been one of my favourite series, and so obviously I jumped at the opportunity to be involved,” he wrote on BlueSky.

“The Owlcat team has been so great, it’s really such a treat. One thing I enjoy is how responsive they are to the fans,” Gaider added, pointing to how the studio recently recast the male version of its protagonist in response to feedback. The game’s reworked and re-designed Martian Captain is now voiced by Blythe Melin.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn shouldn’t be confused for the other very Mass Effect-y RPG coming out next year, Exodus. Though it’s good to hear that both upcoming projects have some BioWare veterans on board, especially after the famed developer was shut down and had its own promising, actual Mass Effect game cancelled.

Bertie enjoyed what he played of the upcoming game in Eurogamer’s The Expanse preview, but also had some concerns about the developer’s use of generative AI.
