A new story trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine that came out of San Diego Comic-Con today further reveals the game’s plot, and it’s really piqued my interest.
New footage from the game teases all sorts of conflict for the hairy, adamantium skeleton-clad mutant, but a panel featuring dev and voice talent from the game brought in new details that make for an intriguing story: namely, the X-Men don’t exist yet in this universe.
Several X-Men characters do show up, but the actual X-Men team led by Charles Xavier, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, etc. do not…at least not yet. The game features several familiar friends and foes, including Sabertooth and Mystique, who are with Wolverine on what’s called “Team X.” That team is led by Nathaniel Essex, who comic fans will know as the man who eventually becomes the supervillain Mister Sinister.
As far as this current game’s villains, the panel revealed that the main antagonists are Bolivar Trask and Trask Industries, known for anti-mutant sentiment and the creation of the mutant-hunting robots known as Sentinels (teased in massive, giant form in the trailer and image above). There’s also Lady Deathstrike, who’s described as the leader of The Hand, a clan of assassins and ninjas. And Troy Baker. It’s literally Troy Baker 0:51 in the trailer below, though it’s unclear who he’s portraying.
This is all to say that this storyline feels like it’s leading to something bigger. The panel was quick to say that the X-Men don’t exist in this universe, but if you think they’re not building towards that eventually, I have a mansion in upstate New York to sell you.
Insomniac’s next Marvel adventure takes place in the same universe as its Spider-Man games, too, so I am very curious to see how the events tie it all together and eventually bring in some very important mutant characters: Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, and the whole crew.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively for PS5 on Sept. 15, and as a Marvel fanatic, it’s easily one of my most anticipated titles, even moreso now that they look to be telling quite a different kind of story than many may have expected.
