One of September’s upcoming PlayStation Plus Extra games just received its final major content update before launch. RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which arrives on PS5 on September 15 and will be available via the Extra game catalog for PlayStation Plus subscribers on day one, has rolled out the Umbral Sands update for Early Access players (on Steam).
The update introduces Dragonwilds‘ take on RuneScape‘s iconic desert region, adding a harsh new environment packed with survival mechanics, new enemies, and one of the game’s biggest boss fights yet. It’s also the final major content update before Runescape: Dragonwilds leaves Early Access and fully launches across PC and consoles later this year.

PlayStation Plus is losing a hefty number of games in July 2026, removing at least 12 titles, including a popular roguelike and a sim game.
Runescape: Dragonwilds’ Umbral Sands Features at a Glance
- New Desert Region – Explore the Umbral Sands, a dangerous desert biome featuring a dynamic heat system that forces players to seek shade, build temporary shelters, or travel after dark.
- New Dragon Boss – Face Fuzan, the Blazing Tyrant, a powerful red dragon that stalks players at night. Defeating him requires surviving the game’s new Fight Cave challenge.
- Fight Cave Activity – Battle through waves of enemies, molten lava hazards, and increasingly difficult encounters for rare rewards and powerful Vestiges.
- New Crafting Materials – Gather Adamant, Red Dragonhide, and Yew to create new weapons, armor sets, bows, and staves.
- Magic Carpet Mounts – Travel across the desert faster with flying carpets, complete with customization options and new color variants.
- New Enemies and Allies – Encounter classic RuneScape creatures like Kalphites and Kot-Haar, while receiving assistance from Icthlarin, the Menaphite god of the dead.
- Additional Language Support – Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, and Korean language support have officially been added.
The biggest addition is Umbral Sands itself, a new desert region that brings some fresh survival mechanics to RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Players will have to deal with intense heat while exploring, forcing them to seek shade, build temporary shelters, or travel after sunset to avoid the harsh conditions. Of course, the desert becomes even more dangerous at night thanks to Fuzan, the Blazing Tyrant, a powerful red dragon that hunts players across the region. Those looking to take him down will need to brave the new Fight Cave, battling through waves of enemies and lava-filled challenges before facing the boss itself for rare rewards.

The update also adds several familiar RuneScape elements to Dragonwilds’ open-world survival gameplay experience. Players can gather Adamant, Red Dragonhide, and Yew to craft new armor, weapons, bows, and staves, while magic carpet mounts offer a faster way to travel across the desert. The region is also home to classic RuneScape enemies like Kalphites and Kot-Haar, while Icthlarin, the Menaphite god of the dead, appears as an ally to help players on their journey. Combined, it’s a sizable update and the final major content drop before Dragonwilds launches in September.
For PlayStation players, the update offers a glimpse of what they’ll be getting when RuneScape: Dragonwilds joins the PlayStation Plus Extra lineup in September. The survival-focused spin-off has steadily expanded throughout Early Access, blending traditional RuneScape lore and creatures with co-op survival mechanics, base building, crafting, and large-scale boss encounters.

The Umbral Sands update may be the final major stop before launch, but Jagex has already teased what’s next. The full September 15 release will introduce the Scorned Wilderness Raid and a climactic battle against Kuldra, bringing one of Dragonwilds‘ central storylines to its conclusion. For PS Plus Extra subscribers, that means the game’s biggest and most complete version will be available from day one.
