There’s a caged Grisha Pup in the Mushroom Village in Mortal Shell 2, and you can get some neat rewards if you decide to free it. Opening the cage rewards you with the Sheephead Totem, an item that enables the ultimate challenge run in Mortal Shell 2, and if you come visit the Grisha Pup again later, you’ll get some extra Glimpses for Shell upgrades along with the chance to fight one of the series’ most notorious minibosses.
Should You Free the Grisha Pup in Mortal Shell 2?
Absolutely. By opening the Grisha Pup’s cage, you’ll get the Sheephead Totem, and later on, you’ll get two Glimpses from it as well. To free the pup, you have three options:
- Buy the Cage Key from the nearby Hunters for 250 Coins
- Kill the Hunters to get the Cage Key for free
- Open the cage by hitting the padlock with a melee attack
I recommend not buying the Cage Key and freeing the Grisha Pup by breaking the lock instead. However, do not kill the Hunters or free the pup before buying the Grisha Remnant item for 2000 Coins. These permanent items are rare (and expensive), and you’ll miss out on this if you get rid of the Hunters early.
After you free the pup, return to the campsite after you rest at any Beacon, and you’ll find the Grisha Pup as well as its mother, a fully-grown Grisha matron. The mother will growl at you at first, but the pup will defuse the situation. Interact with the Grisha Pup again to get two Glimpses, which you can use for upgrading your Shells.
Attacking the adult Grisha will cause it to attack you as well. Normally, defeating a Grisha will yield a Grisha Remnant. You only have one chance to beat this monster here, and unfortunately, I died to it, so I can’t confirm if you can get a remnant from this Grisha specifically.
How to Use the Sheephead Totem
The Sheephead Totem that the Grisha Pup gives you has two functions, and its use depends on how you equip it:
- Equipping the Sheephead Totem as an active ability lets you turn into a sheep
- Equipping the item as a passive ability reduces the max health of all enemies by 1%
If equipped as an active ability, press D-Pad Down/1 to transform into a sheep. As far as I can tell, there are no practical benefits to this — your DPS will plummet, your movement speed will slow down to a crawl, and you’ll lose access to your equipped Seals and Tarstones. You can still dodge and heal, but that’s about it.
The Sheephead Totem’s passive is more useful, though. The 1% reduction to enemy health won’t make much of a difference at first, but once you get more Sheephead Totems, the effect becomes stronger.
