How Solo Leveling Balances Personal Struggle With Heroic Action

Solo Leveling’s core strength lies in its ability to balance epic battles with the heartfelt struggles of its protagonist.

Jin-Woo’s powers are growing at an exponential rate, and it feels like our protagonist can defeat any opponent now. However, the truth is that Jin-Woo still has a long way to go to actually become the “Strongest” being in the Solo Leveling universe. But it does beg the question: How strong is Jin-Woo at this point in the story (Season 2)?

Warning: This post contains SPOILERS from Solo Leveling Manhwa.

Sung Jin-Woo’s Power Level At The Start Of Season 2

He’s A Little Behind S-Rank During The Red Gate Arc

Sung Jin-Woo started out as an E-Rank, but after getting access to the System, he was able to level up at a rapid pace. He started from the bottom, and we’ve seen him defeating D-Rank magic beasts, C and D-Rank bosses, including Venom-Fanged Kasaka. Jin-Woo also defeated the B-Rank Hunter Kang Taeshik, that too very easily. So, he was clearly an A-Rank at the end of Season 1, but possibly at a lower level. That is evident from Jin-Woo’s fight against Igris, who was an A-Rank Boss during the Job Change Quest. Jin-Woo eventually defeated Igris and added him to his Shadow Army, but there’s a catch.

When Igris was fighting Ice Bear’s leader with his sword in Season 2, Jin-Woo states that he would have lost if Igris had used his sword during the Job Change Quest. He then mentions that maybe at his current level, he’s on an equal footing with Igris, but Jin-Woo instantly corrects himself and says that he might still be weaker.

Only at my current level are we on equal footing…No, I might still be weaker. – Sung Jin-Woo

Igris was an A-Rank boss, and since Jin-Woo was weaker than him during the Red Gate Arc, he was at a lower level of A-Rank. Also, it’s clear that the boss of the Ice Elves, Baruka, was S-Rank. So, it’s understandable why Jin-Woo had a hard time defeating him, even with Igris by his side. That is why he added another A-Rank Hunter, Kim Chul, to his Shadow Army, and it took three A-Ranks to defeat this enemy.

All being said, Jin-Woo leveled up after defeating the Red Gate boss, which is evident from all the Notifications that popped up right after the fight ended. So, our protagonist might have surpassed Igris’ level once he stepped out of Red Gate.

Jin-Woo Reaches S-Rank After Defeating Baruka

But He’s Still Not The Strongest Hunter In Korea

Unlike everyone else, there’s no limit to Sung Jin-Woo’s growth, as his powers grow exponentially after each fight. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that he entered the Red Gate as an A-Rank Hunter and came out as an S-Rank. This is confirmed in the manhwa when Sung Jin-Woo looks back at the moment when Baek Yoonho puts his hand on Jin-Woo’s shoulder. Baek is an S-Rank Hunter, and at that very moment, Jin-Woo realizes that he has only reached the level of an S-Rank Hunter.

When I met Baek Yoonho, I realized that….I’ve only just reached the level of an S-Rank. – Sung Jin-Woo

Even though he entered the S-Rank club, Jin-Woo is still far from being the strongest “S-Rank Hunter” after the Red Gate incident. Of course, Jin-Woo implied that he was on the same level as Baek, but it’s important to note that in the Solo Leveling manhwa, Baek is considered one of the weakest S-Rank Hunters in the world.

Retesting Arc Confirms Jin-Woo’s Rank

Up until this point, Jin-Woo’s current rank was subject to speculation. However, his rank is confirmed after the Demon Castle Arc when Jin-Woo decides to appear for retesting. As expected, he comes out to be an S-Rank and one of the top 10 Hunters in Korea. After the Red Gate incident, Jin-Woo goes through other strong opponents during the Demon Castle Arc. He already leveled up to S-Rank after defeating Baruka, but his powers grew even further after he completed several floors at the Demon Castle.

Sung Jin-Woo’s Rank By The End Of Season 2

He’ll Be The Strongest Hunter In Korea During Jeju Island Arc

While it’s not yet confirmed, many expect Season 2 of Solo Leveling to end on the Jeju Island Arc. The second season might not finish the Jeju Island arc, but it’ll possibly end by teasing it for the next season. Regardless, Sung Jin-Woo will become the strongest Hunter in Korea by the time he reaches the Jeju Island Arc.

Of course, Jin-Woo was, at best, A-Rank during the Red Gate Arc, but he levels up quickly after that in the manhwa. He not only clears out an A-Rank dungeon all by himself (During Hunters Guild Gate Arc) but also defeats Baran, the Monarch of White Flames, after returning to the Demon Castle. This is unlike any threat that any Hunter in Korea has ever faced. So, you could say that Jin-Woo will debut in Jeju Island Raid as the strongest in all of Korea.

That being said, at this point, there will be other Hunters around the world who will still be stronger. This includes names like Thomas Andre, America’s strongest Hunter who has yet to make an appearance in the anime. However, by the end of Jeju Island, there will be no one from Korea who could match or challenge Jin-Woo’s might. In fact, Jin-Woo will become the “National Hero” after the Jeju Island Raid and will be recognized by hunters all across the globe.
