The Alters: Last Variable DLC pack is out next month, introducing 20 hours of new content, including an “entirely new progression loop”

The Alters: Last Variable is a new DLC coming for 11 Bit Studios’ survival game, The Alters, on 13th July.

Coming to PC and consoles, Last Variable focuses on Jan Scientist(s), who is looking to “pursue his true calling”.

While the other Jans left, he chose to stay and lead a team of new specialists assembled “by himself, and from himself”, as “only a crew of altered Jan Scientists can offer the expertise needed to unravel the phenomenon of the Oasis”.

It’s only a wee peek – the trailer’s only 70 seconds long, I’m afraid – but it does offer a brief flavour of what’s coming up. Check it out below:

This expansion introduces around 20 hours of new content, featuring an “entirely new progression loop built around exploration, scientific research, and terraforming”. You can build an underground base, develop new technologies, and transform “barren regions of the planet into thriving biomes while dealing with the consequences of your actions”.

“Dive into a robust 20-hour expansion and return to the scorched planet,” the blurb teases.

“To unlock the mystery of the Oasis, you’ll need to master new terraforming mechanics to reshape the surface and command a specialised team of Jan Scientists… but remember, even though they look like you, they don’t always think like you…”

The Alters: Last Variable is expected to release for all platforms on 13th July.

The Alters, you may remember, came under fire this time last year after players discovered AI prompts in both subtitles and flavour text in the game, intimating routine use of large language models (LLMs) without disclosure. At the time, developer 11 Bit had not disclosed the use of AI on its Steam page.
